The time evolution of the wave function is given by the total energy of the system

The Imaginary Unit (i): This is the square root of -1. It ensures that the solution is a wave that oscillates instead of something that just decays or fizzles out immediately

The Reduced Planck Constant (ℏ): A tiny number that sets the scale where classical physics stops working. If this were a large number, you’d see your coffee cup tunneling through the table

The Wave Function (ψ): This is a probability amplitude. It isn’t “solid matter” but rather a field of information

The Hamiltonian Operator (Ĥ): This represents the Total Energy Think of it as a command that “reads” the state of the particle and extracts its energy (kinetic + potential)

The Partial Derivative with respect to Time (∂/∂t): ▪This tells us how the wave function changes moment by moment. ▪It is partial because the wave function depends on both time and space (where the particle is) ▪ The partial derivative isolates time to see how the situation evolves as seconds tick by. Without it, we would only have a static snapshot

Explanation : The chain still sitting in the pot pushes back against the chain that is moving out of the pot. That push gives the chain an upward “kick,” which launches it above the rim before gravity takes over and pulls it down. The chain pushing off the pile provides a downward force on the pile, which corresponds to an upward reaction force, effectively “pushing” the chain up in the air. Repeated over and over, it creates that fountain shape, or a self-siphoning effect.

Steve Mould popularized the effect, which is why it’s named after him. (The Mould effect) The height of the fountain actually depends on how the chain is arranged in the container, and the height the container itself is placed, which will create a bigger upward kick when placed higher.

Reflection: What Are We Really Measuring?

For most of human history, measuring time meant watching the sky.

Shadows moved across sundials.
Water flowed through carefully shaped vessels.
Pendulums swung back and forth.

Each generation created more precise clocks, but the basic assumption remained the same: clocks measure time.

Modern physics has complicated that idea.

Atomic clocks don’t measure something flowing past us. They measure extremely stable repeating patterns inside matter itself. Optical lattice clocks push that idea even further, counting oscillations of light and atoms with astonishing precision.

In other words, every clock is really measuring change.

A pendulum changes position.
A crystal vibrates.
An atom shifts between energy states.

If that’s true, then a deeper question emerges:

Is time something that exists independently…

Or is it something that emerges from patterns of change in the universe?

Humanity’s race to build ever more precise clocks may ultimately reveal something unexpected — that time is not simply a backdrop to reality, but a structure that arises from the relationships between events.

So here’s a thought worth sitting with:

If nothing in the universe changed — no motion, no interaction, no transformation — would time still exist?

Or does time only appear when something happens?

Einstein’s role in the atomic bomb.

The world’s first detonation of a nuclear device was called Trinity, conducted on July 16, 1945, at the Alamogordo Bombing range in New Mexico, about 120 miles (193 km) south of Albuquerque. It marked the first successful test of an atomic bomb developed under the Manhattan Project in Manhattan, NYC, led by J. Robert Oppenheimer & his brother, Frank, also a physicist at Los Alamos. They were both accused of having Communist ties. Under Senator Joseph McCarthy, thousands of Americans were accused of being Communists during the Cold War period, the Oppenheimers included. He had to resign his teaching position at the University of Minnesota & could no longer work as a physicist in the U.S. He was allowed, however, to teach physics at a high school. A review by the U.S. government reversed the decision of 1954, acknowledging that the original hearing was biased & unjust.

The amount of energy released was mind-blowing, equivalent to 21,000 tons of TNT (trinitrotoluene) or 42 million lbs (19,050,875 kg). Einstein’s connection to Trinity was indirect but foundational. He didn’t work on the Manhattan Project, was not present at the Trinity test, & had no security clearance to participate. His role was catalytic, though: his 1939 letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, co-signed with physicist Leo Szilard, warned that Nazi Germany might develop nuclear weapons. This letter helped spur the creation of the Manhattan Project, which ultimately produced the atomic bomb. Einstein’s equation E = mc² provided the conceptual basis for understanding how small amounts of mass could be converted into enormous amounts of energy—central to nuclear fission. When the atomic bomb exploded, it created a blazing fireball 2,000 ft (610 m) in diameter.

Einstein’s famous equation E = mc² says mass (m) is just another form of energy & the two can be converted into each other. Imagine a paperclip weighs about 1 gram (0.035 oz.); if you could convert that entire gram (its mass) into pure energy, it would release about 20,000 tons of TNT—roughly the size of the Trinity explosion. The speed of light squared explains why nuclear reactions release so much energy. It explains why stars shine; they convert mass into light & heat.
