There are parts of a man’s life that the world photographs.
The steel in the sky.
The vertical concrete.
The beam work done with a chainsaw and a safety harness, suspended over nothing but wind.
People understand that kind of danger. It’s visible. It looks heroic.
What they don’t see is this.
Maker left this week to take care of his brother, who is in a hospital bed and in a hard season of his life. The kind of season shaped by alcoholism, by traumatic brain injury, by the long-term cost of functioning in environments that demand strength and offer very little mercy in return.
Maker understands that terrain in a way few people do. He has lived inside that nervous system. He has worked inside that pressure. He knows what it is to claw stability out of chaos and keep showing up anyway.
His father is gone now.
Which means, without ceremony, he is the one who steps forward.
He may be gone for weeks.
Neither of us is excited about the distance. We have built a life that feels calm and solid and hard-won. But this is what it means to belong to someone who was raised to shoulder weight instead of avoid it.
