New Model Army is a band I only recently discovered in 2020 and had absolutely no idea they had such a long history going all the way to the mid 1980’s. Not sure if Beginning was the first track I heard from them or not. Or as I heard someone else say, New Model Army is that band you recognise but never knew who they were. Beginning is such a slow burn of a haunting track. Hold on to the beginning being a mantra repeated over and over again and for the longest time I had no idea how to interpret this. What is so special about the beginning? Surely we are here to move forward and make change and holding onto the beginning carries the risk of nostalgia. A horrible affliction that causes outbreaks in stagnation and comfortable complacency.
But I kinda get it now. The beginning is where your roots are found. To reference a recent fantastic movie, where core memories are formed. If those fade, you end up being a ghost in your own life and just drifting without purpose. So yes, while the fear of nostalgic outbreaks is valid, the need for a core belief system rooted in the beginning is needed to navigate life. Not just to float through it and take it as it comes. But who knows? Maybe I am completely wrong in my interpretations of what life is supposed to be. What the beginning means. What the future is. Why the beginning carries significance.
I like this song though. It forces you to sit with these questions while so subtly and violently building up to a cry of hold on. Drums being pounded like they owe someone money, singer belting out hold on at the top of his lungs and being drowned out by the sheer size of the sound the music makes. It’s a forced journey of self-reflection. How we all clutch onto that thread. Sticks with me. So much. What am I clutching onto? Why do I hold it so tightly? Why do I need to hold onto the beginning? Why is the music so damn loud I can barely hear myself think or what the singer is saying as the song reaches its conclusion? Beginning is a question I still cannot answer but I love being given the opportunity to try whenever I listen to this track.
That night had been so good, like something out of a dream. And they were so far from it now.
