It’s officially St Patrick’s day ! And this little Irish heart is so happy ☘️
Hope everyone has a great day and celebrates where and how they can🫶🏼
Around this time of year, without fail, I always get this deep sense of longing for a country I don’t belong to anymore. My family emigrated from Northern Ireland during the famine, and we’ve lost all remaining record of our lives before that.
I’ve grown up in the southern United States for my whole life, but even then I’m not connected to any facets of southern culture due to growing up in a city with northerners for parents.
I feel that a majority of diasporas in the modern United States, even those far removed from their homelands, crave a culture they can connect themselves to. America is a unique case of a country that is both a hub for culture and yet lacks a specific cultural identity of its own. American children are told that we are a “melting pot of cultures” from an early age, where we come together to discard our heritage and create a new “better” culture. But the natives of the country were nearly wiped out by disease and bigotry. How can you be a melting pot when the fire that heats the pot has gone out?
A majority of Americans born on American soil feel that they have no traditions, no cultural music, costume, food, or stories to tell or share with the world. There’s a significant guilt that comes with calling a land you’re not native to your culture.
I would like to preface that this is coming from a uniquely white point of view, I cannot speak for the experiences of POC diasporas in America.
Many European people who emigrated to the US discarded their cultures in favor of a homogeneous “white” experience. There is no other way to explain such an experience. White American culture is built on the foundations of colonialism, fascism, and racism. When you hail from a country that is uniquely anti-colonialist, there is a feeling of displacement and isolation from your ancestors culture.
This is more of a brain dump/rant than anything of true substance, but I just wanted to express the feeling I get around this time of year when saint w day is tomorrow. Saint Patrick’s day, like Cinco De Mayo, is an almost exclusively American holiday made by emigrants to celebrate their cultures.
preparing myself for an ungodly amount of leprechaun jokes tomorrow #mewhenimirish

Y’all already know Lily and Remus would become the biggest
patriots on St Patrick’s day. Like just because Remus is from Wales he would be so into it and join Lily in whatever wild activity she gets up to.
Im talking Lily Irish dancing on top of the table in the bars and then the two of them starting to jive in rugby jerseys while drinking pints of Guinness.
I wanna thank Ireland for making jacksepticeye, Niall Horan, and cillian murphy 🕯️🕯️🕯️🕯️
