Day three of OrcaCon was a bit of a short day for me, because I had to leave super early if I was to make D&D, and it was the last session before scheduling collapses a bit.
[[MORE]]I started out the day learning Carnival of Monsters, which is very much a quick drafting game. You play as aristocrats, hunting monsters because it is the done thing and draft secret goals, MtG style lands, and monsters, paying for the goals and unplayable cards with coins and the monsters with lands. It was fun enough, and pretty lightweight. I’m not running out to buy this, but it was fine.
Next up was Nefarious; a lighthearted game about mad science and world conquest. It’s a game where you set your minions to try to predict your opponents’ actions in order to help fund your own inventions. I was able to win off going heavy on hand attack and card draw. I had fun; it was a good game to play early in the day.
I finished off the convention with a game of The Networks, which I’m bummed to learn is not only out of print, but the publisher seems to just be gone. It’s a neat game where you run a television network, doing your best to get the most viewers by buying up the best stars, developing the best shows, and attracting the best ads. There’s an odd level of planning, with shows and actors attracting different viewership as seasons progress, as well as some cards that flipped under different circumstances to give different bonuses. I quite liked this one, and I’d buy a copy if I could find it.
At that point it was noon, and I had to end the con early to make it to D&D.
