Jaco and Mary

“I think a lot of people endorsed my father, treating him as the genius jazz musician, self-destructive, who couldn’t handle fame or his own creativity, and turned to alcohol, drugs, and eventually became a sick man. These elements definitely close the equation, but they don’t solve it. I do not subscribe to the theory of the doomed jazz musician. This was not my father, although superficially he seems to fit this description.
My father was allowed shameful behaviour, because he was Jaco Pastorius. They would never have allowed a normal person that loss of control, nor the prerogatives he received. This seemed to work in his favour, but in reality, I think it worked against him. It prevented him from getting the help he desperately needed. (Mary Pastorius, Jaco’s daughter born in 1970)
