There’s a little bit of spice in old Funimation dubs that’s just missing from modern anime

Maybe it’s the fact that they’re all subtly southern.

Wikipedia Screenshot (linked) reading:
AnimeLab Pty. Ltd. was a video on demand service that specialised in the online streaming and simulcasting of Japanese anime series, serving the Australian and New Zealand market.

AnimeLab originally launched in beta on 28 May 2014 as a Madman Entertainment skunkworks project with 50 series and 700 episodes, and replaced the Madman Screening Room. During its beta, AnimeLab streamed its series for free without advertisements. Originally streaming titles exclusively from Madman's catalogue, on 4 September 2014, distributor Siren Visual announced that they would release titles on AnimeLab, starting with The Devil Is a Part-Timer!. AnimeLab also simulcasted Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works, despite Hanabee acquiring the distribution license for the series.

On 26 May 2015, AnimeLab announced that the website had exited beta, and introduced a paid subscription, alongside an ad-based free service.

In August 2016, AnimeLab launched AnimeLab On-Air, an anime programming block airing on Friday nights on C31 Melbourne and C44 Adelaide. The block later moved to a Monday night schedule.

On 25 August 2017, AnimeLab announced that they would begin streaming select titles from Adult Swim's back catalogue. The Adult Swim titles were later removed in 2020.

At Madman Anime Festival Melbourne 2018, AnimeLab announced that they had reached one million users. AnimeLab also announced a collaboration with the Australian Red Cross to promote blood donations in Australia with the simulcast of Cells at Work!.

On 24 January 2020, Funimation announced that it would be shutting down access to FunimationNow in Australia and New Zealand on 30 March, merging all of Funimation's titles onto AnimeLab.

On 10 June 2021, AnimeLab announced that it would begin the process of rebranding as Funimation on 17 June, with current AnimeLab subscriber credentials being transitioned onto Funimation's website on that date, and staff transitioning to Funimation ANZ. On 2 November 2021, AnimeLab announced that it would retire the service on 9 December 2021.

I have taken all numbered links out so screen readers aren't just reading dead links. Link to Wikipedia page attatched.ALT

I find it so disheartening that animelab is now just a footnote on the Crunchyroll store wiki. ONE MILLION USERS. At the time Australia had 25.2 million people and New Zealand had 4.89 million. So out of the combined estimated population of 30.09, roughly 1 in 30 had animelab. Unless I’m doing the math way off, which some part of me hopes that given how much my internals sank just thinking that.

FUCK FUNIMATION, FUCK CRUNCHYROLL.

Rant bellow the cut.

The two biggest anime exclusive sites I can find are HIDIVE and Retro Crush, both are not available in Australia and New Zealand. Do you understand the problem, because the deeper you go the worst it gets. I am so tired of trying to find places to watch things and them being US exclusive because I’ll be honest, we are not seen as profitable so nobody cares.

I used to have Cruncyroll after my animelab tuned into Funimation and then Cruncyroll where I stayed until it cost $149.99 for the year subscription the second year in a row. I know that that won’t seem bad to some people but Australia is a place where disposable income isn’t in excess. I just couldn’t justify it. They would spit in my face the entire time too, ads for the shop constantly. Pop up screen blocking ads for the shop as soon as I opened the app. Worst still, the shop was US only, at the time and largely now too.

FUCK SONY FOR ALL OF THIS, FUCK CAPITALISM, FUCK AMERICAN-CENTRISM

But at the end of the day, fuck us I guess. Fuck us over and over again. Lead our men to die and leave us defenseless. Take our shows and turn them into nothing more than products that we see no profit from. Laugh at our accents unless you find them hot. Make us use your word, watch your shows, and when we aren’t making you profit, cut us off.

I don’t hate people from or in the US, I hate your government, I hate your companies and those who run them. I hate western ignorance, and if you think that is a part of you, allow me to hand you a scalpel. Cut that shit out. This isn’t about you.

Edit, the Australian population link keeps dropping so: https://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/lookup/3101.0Media%20Release1Dec%202018

Today’s outing on CrunchyRoll had me open the page for one, and remove a couple of items from my wishlist, before it stopped working.

Motherfucking CrunchyRoll fucked up again, and this time I didn’t open any new windows. I just added a bunch of stuff to my wishlist, and was moving through the wishlist to pare it down.

Maybe it just times out?

CrunchyRoll finds ways to get worse, every - single - day.

So, the problem I was having? It seems to be from opening a bunch of tabs.

Something I do on every - single - site I shop from. Every single one. And this is the first time it’s caused this level of a problem, where the site just won’t work for… a day? An hour?

*deep breath*

They also won’t even show the back cover for a bunch of anime, embed videos that won’t play, somehow only found 2 Isekai anime to put in the Isekai category

This is on top of not listing episodes for most of their products, literally taking nearly a year to find items the post office returned to them, destroyed both the Funimation and CrunchyRoll streaming apps, destroyed the RightStuf store, that did everything the current CrunchyRoll ones does, but better.

They literally have me, a long time anime fan and customer for every single service they provide, actively trying to put anime into my cart, and they then fuck it up because I opened a bunch of tabs.

Oh, yeah, the site also breaks if you try to filter for more than one category when browsing.

I’m glad that I now have the Ocean dub of Dragon Ball Z on DVD, but man I wish I could have gotten the Rock the Dragon collector’s edition set back in 2013 so that I could have them all in one set instead of multiple volumes.

Weird that Yagami Yato kind of just disappeared after lying about being in the MHA dub and funimation and kaminari’s dub VA had to come out and say “YOU’RE NOT AFFILIATED WITH ME !” and then continued to lie and say she never said she was gonna be in MHA when she had an entire post saying she was.

Still wondering why she just lied. That was a time to be alive. I think she really overestimated how many fans she actually had and thought that Funimation would just throw her a random role if her fans harassed enough (they were already harassing Zeno and other VA’s) and went “please please please please please” but forgot to do the actual asking part and went straight for “I’M GONNA BE IN SEASON FIVE !” and then assumed Funimation would see that her fans would want it and would email her like “Welcome to the team !” Like that’s the only thought process I have that could think about why she did it

Apparently some shit also went down in her discord and her viewer count just never recovered along with lying about being in MHA and that’s why we never really hear from her anymore.
