The Corner Cafe

The cafe stood on the corner of several roads that converged together. It appeared freshly painted and the soft lights at the window welcomed the travel weary customers. There were several lush green plants around the large entrance, that offered protection for outside dining, where the area gently snaked away from the busy road.
[[MORE]]I climbed out of my car and made my way inside. Today was a day to be cosy and warm, away from the dark, grey clouds that threatened rain. Glad to stand for a short while after my journey, I surveyed the menu on the board in front of me and ordered my coffee and lunch. Making my way to a corner table at the back of the room, I made myself comfortable. I noted that there were already several people seated at tables. Where had they all come from, I wondered.
There was a young couple with a child seated in a high-chair, tucking into their refreshments but clearly distracted by the entertaining toddler, who was trying out new words to fit the food he was tentatively sampling. Was that the intention of their visit, I wondered, to expose their child to new experiences or were they simply too tired to cook at home? An elderly man was sitting at the neighbouring table with his cup of tea. Now and then he would peep out from behind the paper he was reading at the young family, no doubt providing some company from his lonely life and giving him something to talk about, should anyone call. Maybe they reminded him of bygone days.
Then there was the smart business man on the opposite side of the room (no doubt away from the noisy babbling child). He was looking at the laptop that lay in front of him, competing for his attention with the sandwich on the plate at the side. He portrayed someone who had much to do, despite it being his lunch break. I watched as he finished what he needed to accomplish on the device, before closing it and quickly gulping down the remaining sandwich as he packed everything away. No doubt his time schedule demanded he got back on the road again.
In the middle of the room sat a couple of teenage boys. They were engaged in animated chatting in-between mouthfuls of soft drinks sucked up through colourful straws and sticky iced buns. Somehow they managed to peer at their phones at the same time, laughing as they compared notes and seemingly unaware of the other customers around them, just enjoying the moment. Every now and then they would stop and poke each other as they spied a pretty girl walking by in the distance.
Then there was the older couple sitting in the window, engaged at looking out at the world going by, rather than conversation. They gave the impression that they had been together for some time and all had been said. Maybe they were looking for inspiration for the retiring years ahead, when children had left home and careers were coming to an end. Still there appeared to be life in them, but what to do with it. Perhaps they were now at a crossroads. Which road would they take?
The two women were seated opposite each other on the edge of the room, deep in conversation. They clearly had much to discuss. Their casual dress suggested that this was no business lunch, but rather a nice, friendly catch up. Were they comparing notes on wayward children, difficult husbands or demanding parents? In any case they appeared quite at home in this environment, as if this was a regular visit, away from the humdrum of housework, family and charity work.
My reverie was disturbed by the welcome arrival of my lunch. I wasn’t sure whether it had been a long time since ordering, but fortunately I was in no rush anyway, although my rumbling stomach may have disagreed. The cafe on the corner had brought us all together. Would we ever meet again? Probably not. In any case, my smile moved along from the retreating waitress to the man who gave me a quick, parting glance as he left, clutching his laptop.
