Ok I’m fully aware physics does NOT want foam “half darts” to work in a P90 style magazine where the projectile has to rotate 90 degrees and descend into a loading position. Hell, physics doesn’t like it when you do that with non-squishy cylinders. But one fucking day in gonna figure out how. Why? Because if you are crazy, determined, and have enough contempt for the laws of science, anything is possible!
There are toys that come and go, and then there are the ones that feel like they belonged to an entire generation. The Nerf Turbo Football sits firmly in that second category. If you grew up in the late eighties or early nineties, you probably remember the feel of that soft foam in your hands, the way it cut through the air, and the satisfying spiral you could throw even if you were nowhere near…

My current module project, “Neutropia,” which asks us to imagine the world in 100 years, has been my obsession. According to the project outlines, severe natural disasters, a preference for nuclear fission over fusion, and architectural modifications like raising ground floors to counteract rising sea levels will probably characterize this future terrain. I’ve come to the conclusion that normal compositing is insufficient to portray this authentically. The physics of the camera itself must be mastered.

Precise camera matching is the first step in the procedure. To match the viewpoint of the original plate and prevent unsettling distortion, aligning the focal length—testing anything from 15mm fisheye to 85mm portrait lenses—is essential. Moreover, obtaining a High Dynamic Range Image (HDRI) is crucial. It serves as a light source, guaranteeing that my integrated 3D objects capture reflections and generate realistic shadows that correspond to the surrounding environment.
Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) experimentation has been the most fascinating discovery, however. 3DGS creates a cloud of “splats,” which are tiny ellipsoids carrying volumetric radiance, alpha, and color data—instead of converting data into surface meshes as in regular photogrammetry. Compared to Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF), this enables high-resolution, real-time rendering that seems far faster. NeRFs are computationally demanding and require retraining the neural network each time geometry is modified, despite their excellent realism.
I’ve been testing capture methods using my phone’s Lidar sensors to generate these splats. It is fascinating how we can now compress these massive datasets into SPZ files, making them 90% smaller than standard PLY files without losing the visual magic. It really feels like we are painting with data.
