Vampire Eyes in Dawnwalker

The photo goes under the text, otherwise it would have been too heavy for an average-sized post

Since Cohen is an unusual kind of vampire, and it’s hard to say how the eyes of other vampires work in Dawnwalker, his case stands out.
In Cohen’s gameplay trailer, his heterochromia is immediately noticeable: one eye is blue with a yellowish corona around the pupil, and the other is golden.
In the first trailer, his mortal eyes appear more grayish? bluish? — it’s difficult to see clear signs of heterochromia. The lighting may simply be hiding it, or perhaps the heterochromia concept hadn’t been developed yet.

In the second trailer — most likely in the moment before Brencis attacks him — you can see the gray color of his eye. Afterwards, every shot shows his eyes during or right after his transformation, where the heterochromia is perfectly clear.

1
Cohen’s eyes didn’t change. He always had heterochromia: one eye the color of night — a cold tone, the other the color of day — a warm tone. It was a sign of his fate: to become a being of both day and night.

2
Cohen’s eyes did change, but only partially. He originally had gray eyes. As a vampire, they should have turned fully golden — but they didn’t. This suggests he is physically stuck between two worlds.
With this interpretation, vampire eyes are golden. (The cold/warm metaphor still works, though in this case “day” symbolizes the vampiric influence.)

In cosplay, vampires have white eyes.
But in the game, we’ve only ever seen the white glow in vampire characters, because they always appear at night — so cosplay might simply highlight that effect.

This glow is also present in Cohen, but it appears only in dark, like a predator’s tapetum.
All vampires have this glow.

In Ambrus’s concept art, where he looks exquisitely beautiful and gem, his eyes are a vivid blue. Brencis has cloudy eyes, the Mongol has black ones, and Xanthe’s red-glowing pupil likely changed to white in the final version.
I don’t think Ambrus is depicted as mortal in that concept art. Still, the idea of vampires retaining their mortal eye color may have changed during development.

My personal preference:
Either the eyes don’t change at all, or they turn golden and gain a glow in the dark.
But I also love when vampire eyes turn red — I’m fond of the classic style.
Dawnwalker blends classical vampire themes with new ones, reconsidering vampirism from multiple angles. I like the eye-glow detail, like a predator’s; the animalistic aspects of vampirism appeal to me.
This is explored in the game, though sometimes the focus leans more toward a “cursed human–undead creature” rather than a “cursed, powerful new predator.”
But the full picture of Dawnwalker’s vampirism is still yet to be revealed.

Sander Cohen and I have talked about doing a performance onstage with one of my little surgeries. Can you imagine? A face sculpting set to original music? The trouble is, of course—” He bent near his wild-eyed patient to whisper confidentially. “The trouble is, my dear, Sander Cohen is quite insane. Mad. Out of his mind! Ha ha-aa! I shouldn’t socialize with Cohen, that loony tune, I have my reputation to think of.”

VIFF 2025 Review: Idiotka

Anna Baryshnikov plays a fashion designer looking for her big break on a reality TV contest in Idiotka.

The VIFF will be full of dramatic films this year, so it’s kind of understanding why I would want to look for a comedy break. I was lucky to get it with Idiotka. It’s an American comedic film that can make you laugh.

Q Response: Ben

Finally posting my Q: The Winged Serpent review. Our first Larry Cohen film together! I enjoyed reading what you guys had to say about Q. it’s a movie that only Larry Cohen could’ve made. The grimy New York of the early 80’s plays it’s own part and adds to the appeal. Larry finds a way to make a strange and entertaining B-Movie on a shoestring budget.

The performance of Michael Moriarty is one of a kind. Much like the jazz he improvises on the piano in the bar at the beginning of the film, Moriarty gives a very freestyle, improvisational performance throughout. In real life Moriarty is a jazz pianist and my guess is he took a cue from his knowledge of jazz and incorporated this information into his performance. It’s amazing that he manages to keep the viewer fascinated without rooting for or against him. The relationship with his girlfriend, played by Candy Clark is bizarre as well. Candy Clark is a strange actress from what I can tell. She plays the female lead in the Roy Scheider film Blue Thunder and she is even weirder in that one. So I don’t know if it’s just her or if she simply likes playing oddballs.

Personally, I love David Carradine in this one. His cool detective is just what the doctor ordered as a prescriptive antidote for the outlandish meanderings of Moriarty. I think he steals every scene he’s in by just playing it cool. My favorite moment from him comes near the end when the cops are shooting at Q trying to kill it and Q comes swooping down getting pretty close to Carradine’s character. Afterward Carradine looks over at his fellow officers making a face and understatedly says, “Big.” It’s a perfect one line delivery from Carradine.

Q is movie that is goofy and bizarre and lives in it’s own world. I really enjoyed it though I don’t think it’s nearly as good as Cohen’s God Told Me To. I would love to see this one in a crowded theater with the right crowd. I bet it would be a lot of fun. Man, a triple feature of Q, God Told Me To and The Stuff would be a riot.
