L'epilessia è una condizione neurologica caratterizzata da una scarica improvvisa di una popolazione di neuroni che contraggono tra loro sinapsi reciproche, le crisi epilettiche. Sebbene oggigiorno si possa convivere con la malattia, è considerata una malattia sociale dall'OMS e nei casi più gravi può compromettere la vita di chi ne soffre. Conosciuta fin dall'antichità (il nome epilessia deriva dal verbo greco epilambanein che significa “essere sopraffatti, colti di sorpresa”) era vista da un lato come un segno della lotta tra uomini e demoni, tanto che in molte culture antiche chi ne soffriva veniva considerato uno sciamano, ma anche come stigma sociale per cui i malati epilettici venivano segregati o addirittura allontanati dalla società.
A Ian Curtis fu diagnosticata nel 1978 una epilessia tonico-clonica, che ha una componente di fotosensibilità, per cui le luci stroboscopiche, i flash improvvisi possono causare attacchi molto forti. Sebbene apparsa improvvisamente, l'epilessia condizionerà pensantemente il suo percorso come cantante dei Joy Division. La band, una delle più leggendarie degli anni ‘80, avrà un percorso tanto breve quanto emozionante, e parte della sua mitologia lo si deve proprio all'epilessia di Curtis. 3 ragazzi di Manchester, Bernard “Albrecht” Dicken, Peter Hook e Terry Mason, fondano un gruppo sulla scia del furore del punk di quei tempi, siamo nel 1976. La sera del concerto dei Sex Pistols all'Electic Circus, tappa mancuniana dell'Anarchy In The Uk Tour, incontrano Ian Curtis. Mason passa e diviene il manager del gruppo, sostituito alla batteria da Steve Morris. Come primo nome scelgono Warsaw, dal nome di una canzone di David Bowie, ma quando registrano quattro brani per un Ep, An Ideal For Living, hanno già cambiato nome in Joy Division, dal sinistro e inquetante nome del contingente di prostitute ingaggiate dagli ufficiali nazisti nei campi di concentramento (dal libro La Casa Delle Bambole del 1955 scritto dallo scrittore Yehiel De-Nur con il nome Ka-Tzetnik 135633, il suo “codice” da internato nei lager).
L'esordio è leggenda: Unknown Pleausures. In esso, due brani richiamano i problemi epilettici di Curtis: Disorder e la potentissima She’s Lost Control, raccontata per interposta persona, una sua amica che soffriva degli stessi problemi. Il disco, prodotto dalla Factory di Martin Hannett, segnerà non solo la musica, ma l'iconografia della musica del periodo, dalla copertina alle stesse esibizioni di Curtis, il cui aspetto, le movenze e perfino la presenza sono pesantemente influenzate dai farmaci che prendeva contro gli attacchi, soprattutto il fenobarbital, e non raramente “inscenava” finte crisi sul palco. Eppure il nuovo disco che iniziano a registrare, nonostante le atmosfere ancora più cupe, claustrofobiche, drammatiche, lo vede spesso sorridente, scherza spesso con i suoi compagni musicisti, sembra allegro.
Il 18 Luglio 1980 esce Closer. Ian Curtis, leader dei Joy Division, è morto suicida da due mesi, trovato impiccato a neanche 24 anni nella sua casa. Come da accordi con gli altri componenti della band, con l’uscita di scena di uno dei membri, essa stessa si sciolse. Nel modo più tragico. Come tragico, doloroso e nero è questo disco, ma magnificamente affascinante. Martin Hannett cura molto la base ritmica, il ritmo quasi afro beat di Atrocity Exhibition (ispirato all’omonimo romanzo J.G. Ballard) ne è la dimostrazione; Isolation diviene, con Disorder e Love Will Tear Us Apart, uno dei loro inni, Colony è quasi claustrofobica. Il trittico Heart And Soul, Twenty Four Hours (eccezionale cavalcata sonora con la voce monocorde e profondissima di Curtis a dominare su tutto) e The Eternal, il capolavoro del disco e una delle più belle canzoni di sempre, disegnano la new wave, il post punk e la stessa idea di musica gotica. La copertina, magnifica, è opera di Peter Saville (lo stesso di Unknown Pleasures), che usa una foto del grande fotografo francese Bernard Pierre Wolff di una tomba, quella della famiglia Appiani, al cimitero monumentale di Staglieno a Genova: un'altra tomba, la Tomba Ribaudo, verrà usata per la copertina di Love Will Tear Us Apart, il singolo che anticipò questo capolavoro. Non fu scelta a caso: l’improvvisa morte di Ian Curtis ben veniva rappresentata da quell'immagine così toccante, delle pie donne che piangono la dipartita, testamento sonoro e visivo della band, che si sciolse dopo l’accaduto trasformandosi poi in New Order. Ammaliante e tenebroso, segnerà definitivamente un'epoca.
