House passes elections overhaul bill that could make it harder for married women to vote

I’ll use myself as an example. I have my Real I.D. Driver’s License, my social security card, my military ID, but they won’t get my Black azz hung up. I kept my married name from my first marriage and added it to my second name…I did it to be petty. I was a young wife and mother, and I earned the right to hold on to the name and I did…but months ago I told my sis we need to get passports cause shit in America is looking bleak for Black people. I talked my husband into getting his. Real ID was first. We both had to leave and get our birth certificates and I had to have my divorce papers. The passport was no problem other than about $200 out of pocket maybe a bit more, because I got the card as well.

My husband had a small hiccup because he was born at home, but it worked out. If you need any of these papers, it would be good advice for you to start now. If money is not the problem time could be.

Trump’s War on Iran Could Screw Over US Farmers

Global oil and gas prices have skyrocketed following the US attack on Iran last weekend. But another key global supply chain is also at risk, one that may directly impact American farmers who have already been squeezed for months by tariff wars. The conflict in the Middle East is choking global supplies of fertilizer right before the crucial spring planting season.
“This literally could not be…

The 5 Big ‘Known Unknowns’ of Donald Trump’s New War With Iran

More recently, Iran has been a regular adversary in cyberspace—and while it hasn’t demonstrated quite the acuity of Russia or China, Iran is “good at finding ways to maximize the impact of their capabilities,” says Jeff Greene, the former executive assistant director of cybersecurity at CISA. Iran, in particular, famously was responsible for a series of distributed-denial-of-service attacks on…

Fact-checking Trump’s claims in his State of the Union address

President Trump touted the economy and his immigration policies in a record-long State of the Union address, and he’ll soon take those messages on the road. The White House is hoping Trump can convince Americans to stay the course, as Democrats slammed the speech for being too partisan, divisive and out of touch. Liz Landers recaps and fact-checks the president’s speech.

Meet Liam, Juan Nicolás, and Diana – three of the “human scum,” as the House Republicans call them, who have been imprisoned along with hundreds of other kids in the nation’s largest concentration camp for children in Dilley, Texas.

While the drumbeat from the Trump administration has been constant for over a year – “The worst of the worst. Killers. Rapists. Gang members. Terrorists. Pedophiles.” – Americans know that it’s always been a lie.

It’s never been about public safety.

ICE’s own data shows the truth: as of February, nearly 74 percent of people in detention had no criminal convictions whatsoever. Just 5 percent had any type of violent conviction. 92% of the growth in ICE detention from September through January came from people with no criminal convictions at all.

It isn’t about “safer streets,” it’s about quotas. Stephen Miller has demanded 3,000 arrests per day – “a floor, not a ceiling” – and reportedly threatened to fire field office leaders who don’t keep up.

When ICE officials pushed back, citing claims that deportation efforts would target criminals, Miller was confused. “What do you mean you’re going after criminals?” he demanded. “Why aren’t you at Home Depot? Why aren’t you at 7-Eleven?”

A retired Homeland Security Investigations special agent explained the predictable result: ICE avoids pursuing genuinely dangerous criminals because “to go after violent criminals, that’s a lot of work. That’s a lot of effort. That’s a lot of time, and candidly, from the people I’ve talked to, the department and the agency doesn’t want to expend that time.”

So ICE agents fill their quotas with easy pickings. Families taking their children to the hospital. Parents dropping kids off at school. People dragged out of their cars on the way to work.

The accessible, the law-abiding, the vulnerable – sweeping up families, workers, asylum seekers, taxpayers… and kids like Liam, Juan Nicolás, and Diana.

Look at their faces. Liam is five. Juan Nicolás is two months old. Diana is six.

The Republican Party calls them “human scum.”

The only “human scum” are those who have lost their humanity.

If you’ve had enough of the Trump administration’s cruelty and the lies, here’s how to take action.

–> Call your representatives at (202) 224-3121 and demand the immediate release of all children from the Dilley and Karnes detention centers and an end to child detention.

–> To read ProPublica’s powerful expose “The Children of Dilley,” visit https://www.propublica.org/article/life-inside-ice-dilley-children

–> To learn more about DHS’ current efforts to vastly expand their detention facilities, including ones for children, you can learn about their efforts to buy massive warehouses around the country at https://wapo.st/3OfarSk – and about community opposition to their plans at https://wapo.st/3OIfSJn

–> To learn about sites around the country, there is an ICE Warehouses of Interest tracking tool showing prospective locations at https://lookerstudio.google.com/u/0/reporting/b0228ccb-6fcf-4ab6-9d9b-41dd53292ec6/page/p_uy4yssvm0d

–> The first step to oppose such expansion is to learn about any plans for your state, and then connect with others to oppose warehouse detention centers in your state. Connect with local immigrant rights groups and/or local Indivisible chapter to see if there are current efforts already underway to support. To find an Indivisible group in your area, visit https://indivisible.org/groups

Why the Supreme Court ruled against Trump’s tariffs

The Supreme Court struck down most of President Trump’s tariffs in a blow to his agenda. In a 6-3 decision, the court ruled that he did not have the authority under an economic emergency law to issue such levies. The president responded, saying he would impose a global 10% tariff under a different law. Geoff Bennett spoke with News Hour Supreme Court analyst and SCOTUSBlog co-founder Amy…

JD Vance on The Atlantic in 2016:

“The great tragedy is that many of the problems Trump identifies are real, and so many of the hurts he exploits demand serious thought and measured action—from governments, yes, but also from community leaders and individuals. Yet so long as people rely on that quick high, so long as wolves point their fingers at everyone but themselves, the nation delays a necessary reckoning. There is no self-reflection in the midst of a false euphoria. Trump is cultural heroin. He makes some feel better for a bit. But he cannot fix what ails them, and one day they’ll realize it.”
