they were soooooo mad over the initial casting and commencement ceremony photos of the new Thai production of Payback that the following day they had to do a photo shoot of the actor for Jay in hard lighting. Alright now that I’m done with the main story of Payback, here are my #thots:
Essentially, I liked the character development of Yoohan and the exploration of the themes of guilt, self-loathing and, finally, acceptance. I heard the novel does an even better job of this so that’s cool. Yoohan is obv the most complex character in this story and as much as I liked Jay (despite his… red flags) he seemed more like a “device” rather than a fully fleshed out character to me. I dunno if this is different in the novel or more will be addressed in the side stories, but Jay in the main story was just giving sexy mf who is MC’s knight in shining armour who is also a touch crazy.
Now onto the story itself, plot was fairly simple but it worked because of the character development. BUTTTT when I saw that I was 80+ chapters in and they were still fucking and that Yoohan got stabbed?? I knew that they were gonna do a “tell-all” type of ending which I think is a bit of a lazy cop out. Again, it may have been more fleshed out in the novel and manhwas have more time restraint but this is my least favourite part of BL manhwa storytelling. As satisfying as it was, everything wrapped up too nicely and it seemed… easy? Even Yoohan mentioned this lol. Especially for a story that keeps emphasising “what goes around comes around” and revenge, the neat wrap up seems a little out of place.
Which brings me to another point about Jay’s character — I’m kinda tired of the whole “ML is the big boss who will eventually solve everything, cuz he’s THAT powerful” okay yeah the novel was written in 2009 and it’s a popular trope but it was just so blatant over here!! That’s what I mean by Jay being plot device more than anything bc I knew that no matter what shit Yoohan got into, Jay will always be there to save him. Which sure, is awesome, but removes some of the tension. And Jay’s whole corporate saga was neatly wrapped with “moves” he made bts that NO ONE, even clearly experienced corporate mfs, saw??? Like bsfr. I wanna see obstacles! I wanna see struggle! I wanna see the consequences of actions in detail!! I actually like a good plot driven story with my character development!
That’s why I enjoyed Checkmate sm bc while some parts were cliché and I knew there would be a happy ending somehow; Eunsung also wasn’t an all powerful being despite coming from a rich family! Soohyun had to use his cunning and wit 80% of the time! At the climax of the story, all I was thinking how fucked Soohyun was and how was he gonna get out of it 😭 or hell even better, Backlight, Seoin got his revenge but at what cost? HE got arrested and now Yeongwoon is the one paying his sanity for it. Like idk wtf is gonna happen which I love!!
Anyways, good story overall and some likeable characters. Jay’s like… a red flag top without committing an actual crime yet but he was a little bit TEW sexy.
