Why is the internet making me choose between two good things? Lunar New Year vs. Chinese New Year? Why not both? Leftist vs. Liberal? Why not both? Pets vs. children? Why not both? James Talarico vs. Jasmine Crockett? Why not both? I know that eventually Democratic Texans DO need to make a choice for the Senate primary seat, but just because I might have a slight preference for one does not mean that I hate the other. And every time someone on other social media makes a patronizing comment in response to something I’ve posted in the past, I’ll comment here instead.
For some reason the most heated debate is LNY vs. CNY. I think this is a cultural thing. I’m Asian-American, I have witnessed the War on Christmas, so I lean towards Lunar New Year to be inclusive. This doesn’t mean I’m telling anyone else to stop saying Chinese New Year. Nor do I think it’s wrong or lazy. I’m from SoCal and I took AP Lit, Lang, Calc, Stats, etc. I can call it Lunar instead of Lunisolar if I want to. Sure, maybe it’s better to specifically say Tet or Seollal for Vietnamese and Koreans, but the thing is … sometimes we Asian Americans … hang out in a mixed group.
Most recently someone said that culture is culture and government is government. And as a Taiwanese-American currently living on the island that is being circled by CCP fighter jets in an increasingly aggressive way, I am pretty anti-CCP. I can admire the things they do well (long-term planning, support for education and research and the arts, investment in green energy, investing in dystopian AI technology in a tactical way—did you see their dancing robots in their CNY show?), but I’m not going to ignore their atrocities just because they’ve gotten better at propaganda. I am an American who regularly debates White Supremacists online, but apparently now I also have to debate Chinese Supremacists who argue that China values its minorities more than the U.S. (I mean, the U.S. doesn’t have a great history and is currently a shitshow, but I’m not going to shut up about the Uighur concentration camps) or that Vietnamese and Korean culture has roots in Chinese culture. I’m from a 250 year young country! We have our roots in English culture to say the least, but we sure as hell don’t identify as English! Megyn Kelly can shut up about Bad Bunny not representing the United States, and so can Chinese people who ignore whole languages and cultures just because China was an empire that had a huge colonizing influence on most of Asia.
Anyway, Happy 3rd day of the Year of the Fire Horse. Happy Chinese New Year to my Chinese-Americans, and Happy Lunar New Year to the rest.
