My toxic fandom take is that I think that it’s awful how much we can talk to creators and get answers from them word of god style. We should be out here in a godless place rooting for scraps of lore in the media like truffle pigs out in the fields

Good Grief (2024)

“the more we close ourselves off, the less we feel. at the time that benefitted me. i got on with it, went back to school, studied finance. built up a successful business. nice house, good clothes. never having desired anyone else. and you can survive that way. until the usualness of it all starts creeping in.

and the new life you built as a refuge begins to feel like a void. because, as it turns out… to avoid sadness is also to avoid love.

that hindsight is a discomfort that you will forever mistake for indigestion.”

Lebanon is currently being bombed with thousands displaced and hundreds martyred. The Israeli strikes are intensifying and nearly one million people are displaced as of 3/12/2026.

Below are a few sources accepting donations to provide food, aide, and more to those affected. If you have any means to donate please do so.

The Lebanese Red Cross - provides life saving medical services across the country

Lebanese Food Bank - distributing food and essential supplies to those who are directly affected and displaced

Egna Legna Besidet - a women migrant domestic worker run humanitarian and advocacy organization providing humanitarian assistance and emergency aide for migrant domestic workers

If anyone has any other places to donate, please share.

Two more sources to share as well:

Disorientalizing - on the ground in Beirut fundraising money for rent and supplies to those displaced from Dahieh

Humans Of Dahieh - also requesting donations for direct aid and support to those displaced in Beirut

Both of the above accept paypal donations. Again, if you are unable to donate please share 🇱🇧❤️

random PSA, I know a lot of people use duckduckgo as a Google alternative search engine, but it always kind of annoyed me when I was using it because it felt like No Name Brand Google

I have switched to using Startpage.com and vastly prefer it. for one thing, instead of displaying an “AI summary” at the top of the search results (unless you turn it off, yes I know), it displays the first paragraph of the Wikipedia article, with link, whenever it finds one that’s relevant.

also a waaayyyyy better sense of design than duckduckgo

also private, European based, least annoying search I’ve used lately (RIP old “don’t be evil” Google)

Keeping a list of Google alternatives just in case…

i have one of those, scraped from multiple different rec posts:

Search Engines

  • Infinity Search is an alternative search engine with a special focus on privacy
  • DuckDuckGo is a popular search engine for those who value their privacy and are put off by the thought of their every query being tracked and logged. Uses bangs, ![site] for in-page search (sells your data to microsoft and draws from fucking bing)
  • WolframAlpha is a privately owned search engine that allows you to “compute expert-level answers using Wolfram’s breakthrough algorithms, knowledgebase, and AI technology.” A data search engine.
  • Boardreader is a search engine for forums and message boards. It allows you to search forums and then filter down results by date and language.
  • Based in France, Qwant is a privacy-based search engine that won’t record your searches or use your personal details for advertising. Uses “&” as a bang search.
  • Another privacy-based search engine is Search Encrypt, which uses local encryption to ensure that users’ identifiable information cannot be tracked. Metasearch across multiple engines.
  • Offering unbiased results from several sources, SearX is a metasearch engine that aims to present a free, decentralized view of the internet. Can be self-hosted.
  • Gibiru’s tagline is “Unfiltered private search” and that’s exactly what it offers. Requires AnonymoX Firefox add-on for privacy.
  • Disconnect allows you to conduct anonymous searches through a search engine of your choice.
  • Swisscows provides fully encrypted searches to protect your privacy and security. Built-in violence/porn filter cannot be overridden
  • MetaGer offers “Privacy Protected Search & Find” through its anonymised search. A plugin will allow it to be made a default.
  • Gigablast is a private search engine that indexes millions of websites and servers real-time information without tracking your data, keeping you hidden from marketers and spammers. Variety of filtration and refinement options for searching.
  • Oscobo is a search engine that protects your privacy while you search the web. By not using any third-party tools or scripts, your data is protected from hacking and misuse. Has a Chrome extension to allow use in toolbar.
  • https://search.marginalia.nu/ an independent DIY search engine that focuses on non-commercial content, and attempts to show you sites you perhaps weren’t aware of in favor of the sort of sites you probably already knew existed. Use old-school searching rather than query-based for the best results.
  • https://wiby.me/ - It’s goal is to index as many personalized websites as possible, and NOT commercial sites.
  • https://4get.ca/ it works a lot like SearX, but honestly better. It doesn’t have its own index, but pulls from many others. I think it’s the best for research, since it allows you to search for answers from different indexes, is easy to configure, add free, and avoids censorship as much as it can.
  • https://www.searchenginemap.com/ for more on how search engines relate to each other.
  • https://yep.com/ is a crawler
  • https://www.etools.ch/ retrieves from Google, Mojeek, Bing, and Yandex, like Searx
  • https://www.dogpile.com/
  • https://searxng.org/ (next gen Searx)
  • https://luxxle.com/ - possibly conservative?
  • https://presearch.com/ - good for academic?
  • https://kagi.com/smallweb - free/randomised Kagi.

Other Searchers

www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.

www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.

https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.

www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.

http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.

www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.

www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free.https://cosine.club/ is an electronic music similarity search engine

Was so confused when I heard that a “Palestinian” film about Palestinian suffering at the hands of Israeli government actually won an Oscar……………..then I learned that its a Palestinian-Israeli film that has the Palestinian main character befriending a nice Israeli settler who helps him in his struggle and while accepting the award that Israeli settler just had to squeezed in how brutal October 7th is and how Israeli hostages must be freed and he made to specify the hostages being Israeli so that you wouldn’t think he’s talking about the thousands of Palestinian hostages in Israeli concentration camps who were kidnapped before, during and after October 7th and are currently being tortured, raped and killed as I’m writing this.

Meanwhile actual Palestinian films and other media (fully made by Palestinian without any outside influence) that highlight the suffering of Palestinians under the Israeli occupation and the impunity Israeli terrorists receive from Western countries without bothering to take a big portion of the screen-time dedicated to showing how kind and nice some Israeli settlers are, so that racists in the audience wouldn’t seethe too much, continue to be the subjective of systemic censorship and removal from western platforms and it would be a cold day in hell before THEY receive a prestigious award like an Oscar.

Or like how the Palestinian writer Mohammed El-Kurd said in his “Perfect Victims: And the Politics of Appeal” book:

Said Israeli (Yuval) is also a raging liberal zionist….yikes

Basel, the Palestinian director, gave a whole speech about how he hopes his daughter (who was born a few months prior) wouldn’t have to grow up the way he did, always fearing violence from the Israeli occupation and then the Israeli started going on about how “both sides are suffering” and essentially using “two-state” rhetoric. Crazy

btw now is the best time to keep boycotting. the israeli economy has never been weaker. don’t stop the protests or the demands for divestment. keep supporting organisations like the Hind Rajab Foundation and the Accountability Archive. ofc don’t stop boosting and donating to Palestinians as Gaza is still uninhabitable.

enjoy this moment but the work has not ended

i think the fandom needs to stop coddling noah wyle and robby in general. stop centering men for once and actually focus on the amazing BIPOC cast and the women on the show. decenter yourself from the white male gaze and white men in GENERAL.

noah wyle is a known zionist, proud of his white families ‘confederate’ history and praises war. bro, just stop.

the thing about nonfiction is you come out of it with several more books to put on your to be read list and it’s only gonna branch out from there so really the only solution is to read every book in human history starting at the beginning

I forget straight people have a really bad habit of using top/bottom to mean dom/sub until I’m talking to someone who calls a women in a m/f relationship a ‘top’ and they get mad at me because I think they meant she’s pegging the guy. Apparently they mean she’s just kinda mean and controlling in bed. This is like the 3rd time this year this has happened.

Being into m/f ships is hard because you will look up “Top [women] Bottom [man]” and all the posts will be incorrectly tagged dombottom women/subtop guy and if you ask people to correctly tag stuff you are the bad guy. I want to her fucking him in his hole!!
