  1. King Baal: In the tradition of the Ars Goetia, the first section of the 17th-century grimoire known as The Lesser Key of Solomon, King Baal (also spelled Bael) is the first spirit listed among the 72 demons and is no accidental. He’s the King, who command 66 Legions, and the first spirit of the Goetia. In ceremonial magic texts, Baal is described as ruling over a vast number of infernal legions. In occult symbolism, “legions” don’t necessarily mean literal armies, they often represent domains of influence or spiritual forces. Being listed first suggests primacy, seniority, or foundational status within the hierarchy. Baal appears with three heads: A toad, a man, and a cat. Three heads in occult symbolism often imply layered perception, divided domains, or composite power. Medieval demonology loved hybrid forms, they represent fractured order or inverted creation. The grimoire claims that Baal grants invisibility, gives wisdom or cunning, and provides knowledge to the summoner. “Invisibility” in occult language symbolize literal concealment, influence without detection, acting unseen and operating beneath perception. The name Baal comes from ancient Semitic religion, especially Canaanite traditions, where “Baal” simply meant “Lord” or “Master.” It was a title used for various deities, particularly storm and fertility gods. Over centuries, as monotheistic traditions developed, rival gods were reinterpreted as demons. Baal transitioned from regional deity to infernal king in later christian demonology. Baal becomes a symbol of hidden authority, fragmented identity, the power to move unseen and the transformation of former gods into demons. Many “demons” in grimoires are echoes of older gods reframed by new theological systems. Mythology is political memory wearing horns.

The Cockatrice is a legendary creature from medieval European folklore, a hybrid monster born from symbolism, superstition, and humanity’s deep love of terrifying farm animals. The cockatrice is traditionally described as: The body of a rooster, the tail of a serpent, with dragon-like wings, often crowned with a comb like a king of barnyard nightmares. Medieval bestiaries — those strange illustrated encyclopedias of real and imaginary animals, helped solidify its image. The cockatrice was feared for one primary reason: Its gaze could kill. Much like the basilisk (a related creature), the cockatrice could slay with eye contact alone. In some versions, its breath was also poisonous, and its touch could wither crops or crack stone. Interestingly, mirrors were believed to defeat it, because the creature would be killed by its own deadly reflection. Medieval logic: beautifully circular and slightly paranoid. A cockatrice was said to hatch from: A rooster’s egg (already biologically suspicious) incubated by a serpent or a toad. This inversion of natural order, a male bird laying an egg, a reptile nurturing it, symbolized corruption and unnatural creation. Medieval minds loved symbolic warnings disguised as monsters. It represents the fear of unnatural birth, deadly pride, and the idea that corruption can hatch from within the ordinary. It’s a fusion of familiar farm life and primordial fear, the chicken coop meets the abyss. It embodies the medieval anxiety about inversion of order: when nature breaks its own rules, something monstrous emerges.

In the Ice Cave

Pixel art based on the video game Final Fantasy 4 for the Super Nintendo. Excellent graphics. And a great adventure into a world of caves, dragons, castles. And huge worlds. With entire, vast stories. There were so many great games like this for this console. A whole golden age of role-playing games. For 16-bit systems.

And this is my drawing based on Final Fantasy 4 (SNES). A magic spell, like a magic carpet, transports you to an ice cave. It’s bright here. Because the ice glows and reflects a lot of light. It’s magic ice. Absolutely. You land on your feet. And look around! Everything around is made of ice. A real ice cave!

Kaki said so, and then the gremlin confirmed his story. They weren’t lying. There is an ice cave. There are columns here from something very ancient. Some of it is broken. These are bridges. They’re too old. And crumbling. It’s hard to tell if you should walk on them. There’s darkness beneath your feet. There’s a pit. A huge, black abyss. And only the icy floors separate you from falling. It’s dark and cold there.

Everything glows with a magical light. But still, part of the space remains in darkness. A mysterious place. It’s starting to get a little chilly, and you should start moving. And quickly find a way out of the labyrinth. It looks like there’s a whole system of passages. A labyrinth. You didn’t think about that. When you asked about this place, neither the dwarf nor the gremlin told you.

It’s time to start moving. In any direction. Otherwise, the ice will freeze you. You didn’t think about that either. But no problem. You can’t take everything into account. There will always be something unusual. The labyrinth looks like it will make you sweat. And wander. In such an icy place, that’s even good for you.

In the labyrinth. In the ice cave, magical power lurks. You feel it. And you don’t know why. But like an icy breath. You make out the words in your mind. Move. The ice is transparent in some places below. But mostly it’s blue. And it glitters. This is all done with magic. It’s only now that it’s become clear to you.

A skeleton-filled crypt, with skulls and bones going up to the dark ceiling. Many small rodents of various colors are holding a gathering. They are eagerly waiting for the next batch of orders from the giant, three-headed, ruff-wearing, crown-holding Rat King.ALT

Nothing says Holidays like an entire squad of colorful rodents holding a secret gathering in a bone-filled crypt. The Rat King is thoroughly pleased. Scheming. Unbothered. Flourishing. The Nutcracker is nowhere to be found.

I joined two friends in making a little lo-fi walking-sim for a videoclip! Alberto Moscone’s videoclip, edited by the talented Mattia Napoli with illustrations by Valentina Marcuzzo, features a few clips from that pixel world!

You can also actually play the game on my Itch!
Take a stroll down the moody streets of Rome at night - no objectives, no unlockables, no battles - just vibes. This places does not exist, but it also certainly does in my heart.
(Game is in italian only atm, I’d love to make an ENG version)
