33 Years of Bare Knuckle II (Streets of Rage 2)
A sequel that didn’t simply make everything “bigger,”
but chose to make everything deeper.
The combat system clearly draws inspiration from fighting games—
dash moves, combo routes, move cancels,
and Special Attacks that function not just as flashy finishers,
but as tools for controlling pace and positioning.
All of this is seamlessly fused into a beat ’em up framework,
at a time when most games in the genre favored simplicity over depth.
Another reason this game is still talked about today is its music.
The House and Techno–driven soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro
felt far ahead of its time for the 16-bit era,
and continues to be remixed, referenced, and celebrated even now.
Thirty-three years later,
Bare Knuckle II is still regarded as the peak of the series,
and one of the finest examples of what a truly great sequel can be.

⏰ A River City game is about to disappear from Steam
River City Ransom: Underground now $2.99
The Western-made sequel to Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari is about to be delisted from Steam, and it’s currently discounted by 85%, bringing the price down to just $2.99.
Released in 2017, the game was developed by an overseas team under an official license from Arc System Works. While the protagonists are Alex and Ryan instead of Kunio and Riki, the core experience remains pure River City: classic beat ’em up combat, character progression, up to 4-player co-op, and more than 140 stages to fight through and explore.
Notably, the images on the Steam store page have already been removed, which is often a sign that a game is close to being taken down. If you don’t own it yet, there may not be much time left to decide.
