Brooo. Why is he low key insecure about this? He’d see you holding the dumb plushie of him so close and with such affection… and even he doesn’t really understand why he’s so pissed off. He’d just stand over you looking at you like, “Really?” He’d roll his eyes before catching you off guard and snatching it away from you, holding it away. His eyes slide away from you and up to the little plushie. It irks him how accurate it looks. Who made this? He better be earning some money off of this at the very least. You whine to have it back and he sighs dramatically. “Babe. Sweetheart. You don’t need this silly thing. You’ve got the real thing right here.” He gives you a grin with a quirked glowing brow, gesturing to himself, every bit the showman he is. 

Don’t tell him that you do need it because he’s always working. He’ll get pissed.

Valentino

I don’t think Val would care. He thinks it’s cute and that’s about it. He might tease you for it, calling it childish. “Aye, amorcito… you do the silliest little things sometimes…now come here, let’s see how your little toy compares to reality.” He snaps and pats his lap at the same time.

Don’t bring the plushie with you though if you value it. He’ll definitely throw it aside before throwing you on the bed. 

Velvette

She makes a new album on her phone for exclusive pictures of you hugging her plushie form. She kind of takes great pride in the fact that you’re low key fangirling over her. She enjoys it, maybe a little too much. That is… until she looks up the brand and realizes that the amount of outfits for the plushies is limited. She scoffs. “Ugh! Are you fucking serious? Just three outfits? Have they seen me?” Now, she’s insulted. She definitely texts Vox about how these need to be trademarked and she’s making a line of clothes for it. 

You’re lucky, though. Since you’re with the Velvette, she just uses her magic to craft new clothes for your plushie. Of course, different hairstyles, too. And shoes. It seems everytime you pick up the plushie since she found out about it, it has a new, super cute outfit on. 

Vox and Alastor - external vs internal validation, reputation, and attachments

There’s been plenty of discussions about whether Vox’ interest in Alastor was ever romantic or not, and even though ‘word of god’ suggests that this is indeed a part of their story, there’s a much more interesting reason for why Vox continues to care, even 70 years later.

(I’ll allow myself the vice of arm-chair diagnosing here, since I think it’s Not Very Subtle and it makes for a useful framework: Vox is a narcissist.
I can go into detail about this but that’s not the point I want to focus on, what matters is what this can tell us about how his mind works, and how this connects directly to his obsession with Alastor.)

As I see it, there is a major critical difference between these two that determines a lot about who they are, and what’s going on between them.

Disclaimer: this is all just my personal interpretation, obvs

Without further ado…

1. Vox

Essentially, VOX is someone whose sense of self is fundamentally vulnerable and very reliant on external sources of validation. He defines himself not just by his status and achievements, but by the acknowledgement he gets for them. 

He’s extremely image-conscious, focusing on people’s perception of what he shows them on the surface, because what’s underneath is…? Irrelevant? Non-existent? Kind of shameful, desperate, needy, weak, unimpressive? It’s the box he prefers to never lift the lid on, and wants no-one to glance at. Look at the pretty box, who cares what’s inside! As long as the packaging gets a lot of oohs and aahs, he feels good about himself.

When the stream of validation for his external image dries up, his ego becomes shaky.  A lack of praise and recognition is a threat on a deeper level to him, and the way he addresses this is to put in a whole lot of effort into reinforcing this grand image of himself to the external world, and in doing so, to himself. 

He flexes his power demonstrating he is strong and influential, he sets himself new highly visible targets, forces himself into everyone’s attention, and eliminates competition for this attention ruthlessly. He’ll undermine and take out opponents who could make him LOOK weak, through whatever means necessary. 

Vox’ reputation, his image is a need for him, psychologically. Without it, he crumbles.

2. Alastor

ALASTOR is a complete opposite in this regard: he’s extremely self-assured and independent, with a sense of security that comes entirely from within himself. He truly doesn’t give a whit about what other people think in terms of it influencing his self-worth, though he IS quite vain and loves his own mystery.

Unlike Vox, when the person he wants to be - the top dog, respected and feared - isn’t quite materializing, this doesn’t frighten him, it’s just displeasing. When the world around him stops giving him what he wants, this gets him to take action simply because he is motivated to put in some effort. He wants it, he thinks he can make it happen, and so he gets off his bum to wrest the situation back under whatever control he needs to keep things as he likes them.

He responds negatively to people not showing him due respect because of what this means for his ability to do this. His reputation is a TOOL to him, and it would be quite a pain in the bum if people started realizing he isn’t as in control as he likes to think. 

3. Vox + Alastor

Now, these two bump into each other.

Alastor encounters himself a pretty interesting fellow who fits nicely into his concept of what he wants his world to be like. Vox is entertaining and no threat to his control over things.

For Vox I imagine it’s much the same at first; Alastor is truly charismatic, easy-going, stimulating, and no threat to his fragile ego. 

I think this is where Vox subconsciously detects what sets the two of them apart so much: Alastor’s incredible stability, his inner strength that allows him to be independent and dominant without losing his cool.

Vox craves control over what everyone thinks of him. Alastor doesn’t even need that.

4. Vox’s perspective:

And lo, that’s something I think adds to how Alastor genuinely impresses him. It’s something quite foreign to freshly-deceased-baby-demon Vox. Vox describes him as ‘inspiring’, and I believe this concerns more than just his experience and skill at their shared occupation. 

Something sparks there, for him - a genuine respect for someone else, alongside the desire to earn their approval. Alastor is now not just someone in his social circle to put to use or ignore, he is now someone whose individuality he respects, and also someone whose judgment Vox is extremely open to. There was a trust, there, this understanding that Alastor knows his stuff and can be relied on.

Vox likes him, as a person, at the very least. He sees him as worthy of admiration, as powerful, as someone worth emulating - he’s in a way BETTER than him in Vox’ perception, in a way that doesn’t immediately make him feel threatened because at the time he really believed Alastor was on his side. That they were friends. 

Vox stands to gain a lot from getting closer to him explicitly. He would benefit in terms of feeding his starving ego the reassurance of approval from someone he considers an authority AND the boost to his pride of being connected to someone so valuable and special just like himself, yay! 

But ALSO, there is the frightening possibility of forging an actual real connection with someone, of letting someone closer and risk them seeing what’s underneath the glitz and glam. He’s even directly risking massive damage to his own image, given his cultural background of guys-being-more-than-pals being a massive embarrassment, to be banished to the grounds of the lowest of social ranks immediately - the mocked and reviled outcasts.

Whether you want to acknowledge that Vox had some real feelings for Alastor there or not, what he did reaching out to him with his confession was a massive deal to him, and not something someone like Vox would do lightly under these circumstances. 

5. Alastor’s perspective (as I personally interpret it):

‘Aw drat, my leisure buddy I was just comfortably enjoying my afterlife with is going to get CLINGY, where the hell did that even come from, LOL???’

Yeah, no. Alastor isn’t looking for attachments. He’s perfectly satisfied without them, and entwining your lot with that of someone else is… very poorly compatible with his ideal scenario of having no vulnerabilities, no distractions, no duties to anyone else that he’s not directly benefiting from in exchange.

Alastor has nothing to gain here from deepening their bond, and if anything, Vox just outed himself as a liability.

6. You could have just said ‘no’

And so, Alastor shuts those shenanigans down nice and firmly, making sure to rub it in that yeah-no-buddy-this-ain’t-happening-ever. I’d even daresay he legitimately got his usual twisted sense of satisfaction out of crushing him much harder than was necessary - Alastor never made it a secret that he has that kind of sadistic streak and it amuses him to see people break.

Vox, having had exactly zero experiences with getting to know people on a deeper level, had no idea what he was walking into, here. Alastor’s desire for power and his comfort with cruelty must have seemed to him as being a lot like his own, just… ‘different’ in some way.

This was a case of a shark obliviously swimming into the domain of a leviathan, when it comes to apathy towards others. He never saw it coming, not like this.

In that moment, it’s as if Alastor was given a tentative glimpse of the dreaded inside of the box, and received it with wanton destructive glee, and decides to pass on a little lesson:

‘Friends don’t exist at this level of play, buddy, trusting others and treating them with respect as equals is for losers.’

The moment Vox’ image got torn down with one fell swipe, he’s immediately told what the mistake is that he made, and why this is happening. 

And Vox believed him. He accepted this explanation as a valid reason, all while being deeply hurt by someone he dared to trust to, well… NOT to that. Because friends don’t kick each other’s proverbial shit in like that. 

It didn’t occur to him to consider that maybe Alastor is full of shit, and that the actual reason he did what he did has nothing to do with the concept of friendship itself, but everything with the kind of person Alastor is. *Alastor* doesn’t ‘do’ attachments and entanglements out of sentimentality (or at least very very very much dislikes the notion that he might). 

On the personal side, Alastor broke his heart and his trust.

On the playing field of Vox’ critical ‘need’ for validation, Alastor, the one person whose judgment Vox considers to have immense weight and authority, didn’t give him what he desperately requires to build his fragile house of cards: his approval. 

7. Vox’s persistent obsession

Cue 70 years later, and Vox is still as confused and outraged as ever about how this asshole got to him so badly, and remains determined to make him ‘take it back’. He still needs to fix that gaping hole of Alastor’s mockery, of his refusal to ‘admit’ that okay, fine, Vox isn’t a loser after all, I guess.

This ONE voice, especially that of someone Vox admires this much, keeps jeering in the crowd, Vox can’t ignore. He can’t just set it aside, not without actually digging into this whole psychological mess of his own inner workings and effortfully letting it go.

Vox has only two options for getting people in line: impress them with his achievements and/or break them until they are proven inferior and thus not worth taking seriously.

He thinks he’s paying Alastor back with the same humiliation and the pain he caused and this will break him eventually, not understanding why this bastard is so resistant to what to Vox would be absolute torture. 

He doesn’t understand that Alastor doesn’t give the damndest shit about what he or anyone else does, provided it doesn’t get in his way, and that it will take much, much more than being beaten in a direct competition of power to get him to comply and give him what he wants.

Vox might avoid losing this contest against him, but Alastor will NEVER concede defeat. 

He will never cower, or be afraid of Vox. He will never degrade himself on a level that matters for anyone, and anyone who tries to get him to do so is painting a target on themselves.

Vox NEEDS to win, or so he believes, and Alastor will deny him what he wants on principle at this point.

Because fuck you is why. 

8. Alastor’s scheme

Alastor’s little gambit during season 2 involved smuggling himself directly into Vox’ inner circle, where he can directly make use of the influence he KNOWS he has over him for his own schemes.

I doubt he had a detailed plan here, but all he needs to know is the few biggest moving pieces on the board and how they tend to behave:

1. It will be very useful if Vox conveniently becomes acknowledged as the stronger overlord, and Vox clearly would like that to happen, too. He’s the ideal candidate for sticking it to Rosie that the deal is broken.
2. The princess of hell herself owes him one, and her word has more power here in hell than that of just about any other entity in hell. She’s a nice, caring lass - he can find a way to get her involved for sure, and declaring Vox the strongest tidily counts as non-violent.
3. As long as he can bring these two pieces together for this declaration to happen, odds are Vox is going to pull his usual handsy bullshit pretty quickly, and if not right there and then, there should be plenty of other opportunities he can set up to make it happen. 
4. He could try to just waltz into the Vees’ tower to stir chaos, but that’s unlikely to reliably get him what he wants, which is direct proximity to Vox. Allowing himself to get captured would achieve this, and making it convincing shouldn’t be too difficult, but Vox isn’t ENTIRELY gullible. Making a formal deal with him (with a limiting condition Alastor knows is much easier to break than it sounds) gives the illusion that Vox ‘earned’ this victory by forcing him to concede, and playing to his ego like this has the added bonus of thoroughly clouding his thinking about the situation.

There’s no deadline for the final resolutions of these deals to happen, but based on what he knows about Charlie and Vox, and the influence he has over them, it becomes a near-certainty that with the right nudging, he can make it all fall into place.

As noted, Alastor’s ego is NOT easily threatened. Vox parading him around and doing everything he can to crush his image in the public eye means very little to him, other than it being uncomfortable and testing his patience. 

He doesn’t enjoy having his power pulled into question in public like this, but at that point from his perspective that was practically a lost cause already (with his staff broken and his control slipping), and if he gets his way, this whole thing is just a controlled set-back. If he can get his power back, he can rebuild his reputation.

(And this is why I 100% expect him to make a come-back with a vengeance in the next seasons, too.)

Vox is also far from the first narcissistic twit Alastor has dealt with. He knows how people like this tick.

‘Mess with the insecure egomaniac and play them like a fiddle’ may as well be a favourite game of his at this point; he does the same with Lucifer going after his biggest emotional vulnerabilities the second he spots the obvious weak spot.

Vox tries to play this game with Alastor (oh my god, does he try), but he still can’t comprehend where Alastor’s confidence actually comes from. He has no control over him, and it drives him absolutely batty, while Alastor is getting a whole buffet of fresh new buttons to press just observing him and his friends up close. 

9. Where do we go from here?

Vox needed to crash and burn, but something needs to change to not have him lapse right back into the exact same dynamic.

Him un-learning the lesson Alastor hacked into his mind and taking him off this pedestal, to make room for a different view, is what I would like to see happen. 

Vox is already very close to figuring it out: he HAS friends.

Valentino and Velvette have gotten to know him, flaws and all. They’ve seen him at his best and at his lowest moments. They still stick with him, and not because they’re forced to, or because they absolutely require him for their plans, even if he mucked up on his end of this bond of loyalty. He’s not owed forgiveness, but he’ll receive it anyway, just because it’s him.

They wouldn’t have the same leniency for everyone. They don’t show others the same affection and patience and special considerations. 

They’ve learned who he is and decided that, yeah sure, he’s pretty cool actually, this one belongs with us. (Just, like… keep the self-destructive meltdowns and power trips under control a tad, yeah?)

They ARE friends, and it’s because of this that their trio is as influential and effective as it is, not despite it. In hell, this seems to be a pretty tough strategy to pull off as successfully as they have, but here we are. 

If he can be made to see this, and discover that Alastor was WRONG, then maybe he can figure out that Alastor isn’t an infallible authority whose approval has to mean something to him. 

Especially if this exact belief, that there is no value in attachments and loyalties, turns out to play a role in Alastor’s eventual downfall, and ‘the power of friendship’ turns out to have value for him somehow after all, Vox would be able to let go of it, too. 

Maybe he can stop giving a fuck about what Alastor thinks of him, dispel this messy love-turned-hatred entanglement he has with him, and focus on the people that do actually give a damn about him in return.

And maybe, just maybe, it might allow him to grow as a person and develop his own internal more stable sense of self, which would allow him to chill with his desperate, futile attempts to ‘fill his cup’ with other people’s admiration.

And maybe even stop, yanno, murdering people to get it. Once he’s freed from his obsession, he can do it just for fun, instead!
