This day, ten years ago, I ran my first marathon. Belfast 2015. I was approximately sixteen stone and it took me nearly six and a half hours. I’d hoped for six hours or a little less.
I’ve since completed Belfast a total of four times, and Dublin once.
2015 Belfast, 6 hrs 25 mins
2017 Belfast, 4 hrs 22 mins
2018 Belfast, 3 hrs 46 mins
2018 Dublin, 3 hrs 58 mins
2019 Belfast, 4 hrs 12 mins
For the last few years (after the covid cancelled 2020 marathon in Belfast) I’ve had absolutely no real motivation to do another one, despite abortive attempts to train for both London and Manchester in 2022. That didn’t come off because the long runs bored the tits off me. I used to do them on a Saturday, and finish up at parkrun, so the last 5k was a bit easier, with company. I came home afterwards one day and when GG asked me how it went, I just burst into tears. Out of nowhere. I’d get to three of four k in, and be so depressed, coz I’d so far to go. That was a definite sign that marathons were no longer for me. At least for now.
My involvement is now solely in the support crew capacity. The other half and I leave early and get to the city in time to see our clubmates at the eight mile mark, then we got to the finish and wait for everyone to make it home. We clap, and cheer and shout good natured abuse at runners we’re friendly with, and encouragement at random runners we didn’t know. That was exactly how we spent today. We left the house at 7.45am and got home at 5pm. Quite a day! I’m now knackered, sunburnt and have a really sole throat. I LOVE it. It’s one of my favourite running days of the year. We have the club gazebo up and we all gather there for tea and buns and to hear the war stories of everyone who’s run. It’s also a great place to visit our friends from other clubs, as there’s a wee village of tents.
Before all that though, I got up extra early, so as not to break my streak. It was too early! Just twenty-five minutes. The long run yesterday was not reason enough to do a short run, but knowing I’d be on my feet all day, supporting at the marathon was. I’ll run a bit later tomorrow, so hopefully more than twenty-four hours rest will make it easier. Today I was tired from the first step. It was another lovey morning though.
