Shaw either never married or his wife divorced him and took everything she could, that’s how much of a shit he is.

I’m thoroughly chuffed that you enjoyed it! I like it for much the same reasons you pointed out. It’s a frequently comedic duel of wits between two people who are clever in very different ways. It’s an especial treat when you see two actors who know how to perform it slowly enough that every word and turn of the conversation sinks in, but who come in on the heels of each others’ lines so quickly that the pace feels rapid fire. (Yes, I have a specific performance in mind. If you ever see the studio production with a young Simon Callow as Napoleon, you’ll have a good time, though I think it’s only available as a bonus feature on the DVD of Arms and the Man from the Shaw Festival.)

One-on-one duels of wits are some of my favourite sorts of exchanges in fiction, and I love all the twists and turns this one takes. One moment he’s falling for her flattery, the next he pushes back to intimidate her, the next they’re sort of calling a little truce because they’re so curious about each other. And then they remember the letters, and it’s back to the dance and the fight.

And yes, Giuseppe and the Lieutenant are wonderful - so many wonderfully goofy lines from them. Giuseppe is content just to be an innkeeper, and be amused at everything these comparative movers and shakers do. And as for the Lieutenant! Such a buffoon - I can see why he drives Napoleon crazy - but he means so very well.

I do appreciate that Shaw makes the plot itself the thing that counts - while there are historical references in plenty, I find they’re all framed in a way that you can catch on and not worry too badly if you’re not familiar with the various battles or Napoleon’s personal life. Man, I’d love to direct this show one day. This was the play that kicked off my fascination with Napoleon once upon a time. I was given like three Napoleon books for Christmas that year, because everyone knew I was interested.

This stinky man came to me in my dreams (when I had a high fever) and flashing like epileptic black-and-red edits from TikTok. An indescribable experience, really enjoyed it, wouldn’t recommend it to anyone 🤩🤩🤩🤩
