I think another reason why transmasc shinobu is so fire to me bc it’s entirely plausible for herself, and only herself, to be the only reason she can physically transition

if we’re not using creative liberties, for most characters that are canonically trans or you’re thinking about them with a trans hc, they either

A: live in a modern/futuristic setting where the procedures are already there (or fantasy settings where it’s magic lol) or,

B: live in settings where the technology isn’t there, making modern physical transition impossible

essentially, most are at the mercy of their era, and have to make do with that fact or are lucky that technology/magic is advanced enough

unlike the examples above, shinobu lives in the perfect spot in history where testosterone hasn’t been synthesized yet (wikipedia says that happened in 1935), but she’s still close enough to when that happens. and, unlike everyone else around her, she most definitely has the skills to be ahead of her time. if shinobu can:

  • invent insect breathing as a child
  • lead an entire infirmary starting at the age of 14
  • inject/consume 700 lethal doses of wisteria poison in a way that still keeps her perfectly healthy(???) and hide douma from sensing it
  • turn those slayers that became spiders back to human
  • be on par with tamayo, a demon with centuries of experience, to help make the anti-kibutsuji drug

…and also have practically unlimited money with her hashira salary, then turning herself into a man must be a piece of cake

basically boynobu, if he tried, is the only one in charge of his own salvation. he’s quite literally a self-made man. that resonates so much with me as a trans guy

like… imagine you know exactly who you know you are, but, with the current knowledge of the world you live in, you can’t be that. in fact, you’re pretty sure no one else feels the way like you do. but you know only you can make the key to unlock the cage you’re in. no one else. you’re completely alone in this. so it’s only up to you to decide if you want to create that key

and, if you do, to know that you created your own path that never existed before, to say fuck you to the laws of nature and what others might say, just so you can be comfortable in your skin? holy shit

and I think it aligns so perfectly with shinobu’s already existing themes. she already defied the limitations of her physical weakness to join the demon slaying world with insect breathing. she did the same with her sister’s wishes so she could avenge her, even though she thought kanae didn’t believe in her. why not do it again?

GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN

Sgt. 1st Class Randall D. Shugart (Somalia, 1993) - Died saving his team during the Battle of Mogadishu.

Sfc. Shughart provided precision sniper fires from the lead helicoper during an assault on a building and at two helicopter crash sites, while subjected to intense automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenade fires. Pity And Its Discontents

The effort made in wanting to show pity to others, and society’s desperate need to cling to the sentiment, is just so ripe for exploitation that it makes me think the world is even more insane than it already is. The act of pity can institute an abusive power differential that can be difficult to recover from. Thus, pity is dehumanizing. It makes one think that they’re just being altruistic and helpful by doing whatever it takes to fulfill their sense of belonging while the one being pitied is taken to believe that they can wring out of other people whatever will satisfy their situation and emotional needs. This dynamic enforces a cycle of self-destruction that other people will have to contend with, however it manifests itself in daily life. No one is really willing to tell you that selflessness can lead to the rotting of your core if you have not learned to detach charitable acts from inevitable outcomes.

The Virtue of Choosing Others’ Happiness

Even in a world that feels deeply flawed— where someone might have to sacrifice their own joy just to make room for someone else’s— the willingness to do so is one of the highest virtues we can find in humanity.

True happiness for others begins with selflessness. It’s the quiet readiness to give up something of your own so someone else can breathe a little easier. And the more people who carry that kind of heart, the more space we create for everyone to live with dignity. Because without someone else’s happiness, our own can never truly be complete.

Pulling the rug on the pieties.

Gurus who sell “no-self = no pain” are either incompetent or malicious. That message is dangerous nonsense. Existential pain is real, brutal, structural and it does not dissolve because someone hands you a metaphysical label. Nobody has the right to promise otherwise.

Selflessness is a cognitive/methodological stance. A way to reduce meta-suffering wich is the extra suffering caused by identity-fusion, self-blame, and narrative loop).

Selflessness is not a removal of existential pain, a moral free pass, nor a route to nullify responsibility or consequences. Clarity narrows friction but it does not remove fundamental structural pain

Everybody who teaches non-self or “letting go” should always pair insight with this moral clause in red: This method does not remove existential pain. If you are in crisis, seek clinical help.” No exceptions.

Everybody who teaches nonduality or not self or letting go must stop pretending metaphysics cures structural suffering. Structural work (mapping, grounding, small projects, therapy, community) helps people function while suffering, not magically stop suffering. That’s the only ethical way to talk about selflessness.

Society praises selflessness because it needs docile servants, not free beings.

I let a fly out the window, I thought I saved a life, but the spider on the ceiling didn’t eat that day. I kept on saving bugs flying in my home, the spider kept on starving.

Today the spider lies lifeless on the floor of my room, as I realize I can’t save everyone by being “good”.

Authentic compassion is only possible through detachment.

If we care for others but are not detached, we might try to use them for our own happiness. We risk adding to their suffering instead of helping to relieve it.

To cradle another being with our attention, fully considering their needs beyond our own preferences, we cannot remain attached to our personal desires or opinions.

As long as compassionate activity is self-referencing, it remains incomplete.

Complete your compassion through detachment and you will understand the true meaning of selflessness:
freeing others from the burden of your happiness.

Then your activity becomes like rainfall–
nourishing all who cross its path.

Would you tell the truth if it meant losing your job?

This post is a response to a question posed in its complete format: “Would you tell the truth about something to help the course of justice if it means you’d lose your job by means of corruption?”

I’ve just rewatched “The Big Short” — a film about the cluster of greed and stupidity that made a few people rich and millions poor and poorer. The housing market grew in a stupidity and greed bubble…
