Media Activism in South Africa
After a visit to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), the activist group Right to Know (R2K) presented us with another side of South African media and stories. The primary goals of R2K include fighting the concentrated media landscape of South Africa and increasing awareness of social issues that lack representation.
The talk with R2K was very intriguing as we spoke about the state of South African media and learned more about SABC; although it is intended to serve the public, it functions within political boundaries. Personally, this led me to reflect on the state of our own American media which South Africans themselves find to be an interesting phenomenon with the election of President Trump.
[[MORE]]Beyond the information presented to us about the state of media, another portion of their activism is bringing information to those who do not have easy access to media and news. A current campaign of theirs is to bring television setter boxes to low income families due to the fact the setter boxes are becoming a new standard that come at a price not all can afford.
R2K also promotes community media centers to create independent content although they are often in competition with larger media companies and find themselves dependent on state funds. Although their work may appear minimal to the majority, R2K supports communities and individuals less represented in media which is crucial for communities whose voices are ignored.
The visit was interesting as we got to learn about what it meant to be a media activist in a country where censorship and monitoring of activist activity is a reality. As an American who is interested in media activism, I got to first hand experience and talk to those fighting a similar battle despite living in different countries.
