'Tis the Season to be Merry (2021) | Movie | Movies Dock

“Merry took a step into the den, her green gaze flickering from one Clan cat to another. Then she shook her head, mumbled something inaudible around the mouthful of prey, and retreated; Lionblaze heard the sound of her paw steps fading.”
“After a while the king led his menaway somewhat eastward, to come between the fires of the siege and the outer fields.Still they were unchallenged, and Théoden gave no signal. At last he halted once again. The City was now nearer. The smell of bruning was in the air and a very shadow of death. The horses were uneasy. But the king sat upon Snowmane, motionless, gazing upon the agony of Minas Tirith, as if stricken suddenly by anguish, or by dread. He seemed to shrink down, cowed by age…They were too late! Too late was worse than never! Perhaps Théoden would quail, bow his old head, turn, slink away to hide in the hills.”
– The RIde of the Rohirrim, The Return of the King
They’re here! The Rohirrim are finally here! Whoop whoop!
As always, thanks so much to @valandhirwriter for being an awesome help and support!
TW for, y'know, war, blood and depictions of death apply. Including to some horses. Sorry!
God there are just FAR too many amazing pieces of art that people have done of the Rohirrim arriving and Éowyn and Merry facing the Witch King… so I’ll share a few of my favourites!
There's I am no man! by Ami Thompson, Éowyn and the Nazgûl by Ted Nasmith, Rohirrim charge at Pelennor by Cristian Otazu, Dernhelm by Matthew Stewart… The list goes on!

i’ve given kuro a lot of shit for his plans, but honestly merry’s idea on how to stop him is also ridiculous. i guess his thought is that if kaya tells kuro she’s giving her fortune to him he’ll call off the pirate attack, but seriously dude, you just got almost sliced into ribbons by the man. do you think he’s the kind of person who wouldn’t just kill kaya immediately? at least send some of those mansion guards with her?
Another one of Tolkien’s many strokes of genius is having Merry and Pippin sort of inadvertently bring Faramir and Eowyn together. They were accidental wingmen, and I think that’s beautiful and also very on-brand for those two.
I saw FotR as a pre-teen when it first debuted. I fully didn’t get it and found it deeply confusing.
A few years later, a friend of mine was surprised I hadn’t enjoyed it because it seemed so up my alley. I rewatched it with her and she stopped every time I asked a question. Most of my questions were, “Who is that?” About halfway through, she goes, “Can you not tell the characters apart?”
This was the moment when I realized my inability to tell faces apart might be less of a quirk and more of an actual problem.
I CAN tell the characters apart now - I think I could do it by rewatch four or five.
But that night when we were watching it together, I couldn’t tell Aragorn and Boromir apart for love or money. If you could have seen my face when they all came through the mountain pass and I went, “WAIT, those are different guys?!”
Also surprising: Merry and Pippin were different guys. Saruman and Gandalf? Different guys.
“Grave and thoughtful was her glance, as she looked on the king with cool pity in her eyes. Very fair was her face, and her long hair was like a river of gold. Slender and tall she was in her white robe girt with silver; but strong she seemed and stern as steel, a daughter of kings.
Thus Aragorn for the first time in the full light of day beheld Eowyn, Lady of Rohan, and thought her fair; fair and cold, like a morning of pale spring that is not yet come to womanhood. And she now was suddenly aware of him: tall heir of kings, wise with many winters, grey cloaked, hiding a power that yet she felt. For a moment still as stone she stood, then turning swiftly she was gone.”
– The King of the Golden Hall, The Two Towers
Slightly shorter one this week, but we are coming up to a monster of a chapter soon, so I think this even things out…
As always, my wonderful friend @valandhirwriter was an inspiration and an amazing beta for this tale! Go check out her work!
I HAD to include this moment of Éowyn and Merry by @noodles-and-tea as this week’s recommendation! It was too perfect.
See you next time when battle finally commences…
