Quando ChatGPT cancella anni di lavoro: la storia vera di un professore tradito dall’intelligenza artificiale
La vicenda di Marcel, professore di scienze vegetali all’Università di Colonia, è una di quelle storie che ti fanno riflettere sul rapporto ormai indissolubile tra accademia e intelligenza artificiale. Marcel, come tanti altri, aveva trovato in ChatGPT un alleato prezioso e quasi indispensabile: lo usava per tutto, dalla scrittura delle email alla preparazione di lezioni, passando per la revisione di pubblicazioni e la creazione di esami. Insomma, un assistente digitale sempre pronto, veloce e affidabile. Dopo aver attivato l’abbonamento ChatGPT Plus, la sua routine quotidiana era completamente integrata con questo strumento, che gli faceva risparmiare tempo e fatica.
Ma come spesso accade quando si affida troppo potere a una tecnologia, il rovescio della medaglia arriva senza preavviso. Ad agosto, Marcel decise di testare una funzione: disattivare temporaneamente il consenso al salvataggio dei dati da parte di OpenAI. L’intento era semplice, niente di strano: capire se alcune funzionalità restavano disponibili anche senza condividere le informazioni personali. Quello che però non sapeva, e che nessuno gli aveva spiegato chiaramente, è che questa operazione avrebbe provocato la cancellazione totale di tutte le sue chat, inclusi anni di lavoro accumulato.
Due anni di ricerca spariti in un click: il prezzo della fiducia cieca
Il risultato? Un “buco nero” digitale che inghiottì due anni di ricerche, appunti, bozze di pubblicazioni e materiali didattici. Marcel si ritrovò davanti a una pagina bianca, senza alcuna possibilità di recupero. “Nessun avviso, nessun backup automatico, nessuna opzione per annullare”, ha raccontato lui stesso, ancora incredulo. Parte del lavoro era salvato altrove, ma una quantità enorme di contenuti è andata persa per sempre, sepolta da un sistema che non prevede vie d’uscita.
Da qui è partita una corsa contro il tempo e la frustrazione: cambio browser, cambio dispositivo, tentativi con diverse impostazioni e infine il supporto tecnico. Ma l’unica risposta ricevuta fu una conferma inesorabile: i dati erano spariti definitivamente. Questo episodio, raccontato con dovizia di particolari dalla rivista Nature, è un monito potente. Nonostante la diffusione sempre maggiore dell’uso dell’IA in ambito accademico e professionale, bisogna ricordare che la sicurezza dei dati non è mai garantita al 100% e la dipendenza totale da un sistema cloud senza backup può diventare un rischio enorme.
Un consiglio che vale oro: fai il backup, sempre
La storia di Marcel è un campanello d’allarme per tutti, non solo per gli accademici. Se è vero che strumenti come ChatGPT possono rivoluzionare il modo di lavorare, è altrettanto vero che bisogna usarli con consapevolezza e attenzione. Il consiglio, che sembra banale ma spesso viene sottovalutato, è semplice: fai sempre una copia di sicurezza dei tuoi dati. Non fidarti ciecamente di nessuna piattaforma, per quanto all’avanguardia possa sembrare.
In un mondo dove la tecnologia avanza a ritmo vertiginoso e le interfacce diventano sempre più “umane”, imparare a gestire le proprie informazioni con prudenza è una competenza fondamentale. Perché, come nel caso di Marcel, a volte basta un click sbagliato per cancellare anni di lavoro, passione e fatica. E quella pagina bianca… beh, può essere spaventosa come un foglio vuoto davanti a uno scrittore bloccato, o il silenzio improvviso dopo una tempesta. Ma almeno, con un backup, la storia può continuare.

Marcel a „real gentleman“. Hardworking, altruistic. He’s always there to help. He is not silence, but prefers to listen. Friends say his advice always helps.
Marcel leads a quiet and conspicuous life. He’s a member of the Art Club. He prefers to paint with real brushes. Hawkins Jr. been painting since childhood. Gouache, watercolors, oils. He knows how to use it all. He even has an easel in his dorm. He doesn’t understand «digital art». His point if view in this topic is rather old-fashioned. It’s like asking which is better: a real book or an e-book. Marcel always chooses to paint on an easel, mixing paints, and wetting brushes. He enjoys the process of painting itself, the way the fabric absorbs his inspiration.
Marcel’s unusual eye can’t be ignored. (It’s asymmetrical. I tried to show it in gl2 using two different eyes, but it’s still hard to see 😢). This is some genetic mutations caused by his mother’s early pregnancy. At first, it was simply an asymmetrical eye, then at his 4 years old his mom noticed he had heterochromia. ¼ of his eye became blue. At age 14, it suddenly developed pseudo-polycoria. This is a “multi-pupils”. He has «pseudo-» (meaning false), because the other pupil can’t constrict or dilate. It doesn’t have muscles, unlike a true pupil. (+ the eye got brown spots. Now his iris is three-colored: green, blue, brown.) With pseudopolycoria the first symptoms appeared, due to the second pupil: strange glares caused by the false pupil. When the true pupil dilated, the pupils are getting close enough to cause abnormal light bending in the eye. For example, if you (plz don’t) stare at a lamp (IT’S DANGEROUS) and then look away, you might notice the light “imprinted” on your vision. This is roughly what Marcel experiences, and it can be quite annoying. Now, at 20 years old, Marcel got more symptoms — deteriorating eyesight. Moreover, the eye’s receptors are getting worse too, causing color blindness «Deuteranopia».
But you’ll never hear about these or any other difficulties Marcel faces. Despite often being a «shoulder to cry on», he prefers to not burden his friends with his “trifles”.
It was because of his secret eye difficultiest his teacher and grandfather Joseph Hawkins was “hired” by his own daughter to look after Marcel. But in fact, Marcel is the one who looks after Mr. Hawkins.
And not just Grandpa. Marcel also helps other students a lot, preventing and resolving conflicts. For his altruism, he was elected class president among the group of Tesha, Kolia, and Sigrid.
