“The One Thing That Hasn’t Changed Since the 1980s”

One thing in life has remained absolutely unchanged from the 1980s to today.
Not finding anything to watch on television. 📺
When I was growing up, our viewing choices were… limited. And by limited, I mean really limited.
In our house the lineup looked something like this:

Channel 3 – WAVE TV (NBC)
Channel 32 – WLKY (ABC)
Channel 11 – WHAS (CBS)

Somewhere along the way Channel 11 and Channel 32…

Cover of the laserdisc for the original video animation “Dirty Pair’s Big Game: Affair of Nolandia”, Emotion/Network Frontier (Network, Inc.), May 1986. Scanned from my personal collection.

There are absolutely no credits on the sleeve, insert or obi as to who did the art for the cover, however Tsukasa Dokite was the character designer and animation supervisor on this OVA, so I’m going to guess it was him. This laserdisc release came out five months after the VHS and Beta versions.

Casino Strip hybrid laserdisc-video arcade game by Status Games; one of an extreme few cabinets with true dedicated screens. The bottom display contained video gameplay. The top display was Laserdisc based and showed spicy content for great gameplay.

The two home media formats I lament not seeing films on them

Status Post #11755: Well, it’s one that was a precursor to DVD and another that was beaten by VHS.

We’ve come to the final journey of Universal LTD… join the quest… with Super Don Quixote!

Hey Arcaders!
1984 was a bad year in the arcades- a lot of companies lost their footing against the great crash that year- but saddest of all… was Universal. Having been around since December 1969, they really made their mark in the early 80s. But they were about to risk it all with not just a game… but something the industry was heading towards… an arcade SYSTEM. a machine that could be changed…

LaserDisc: The Format That Brought Cinema Home Before Its Time

There was a LaserDisc home entertainment machine on a shelf in the living room in the early 1990s. It looked like it came from the future. It sat between a VHS player and a stereo receiver. The tray slid out with ease. You could pick a chapter with the remote. The sound was rich, and the picture was clear. There was a pile of shiny twelve-inch discs next to it. They were packaged like vinyl…

OLD TECH :)) (for the 35th time)

Just finished cable management on my corner here, it doesn’t really look better but it’s a hell of a lot more manageable now

Anyway I’ll be showing off my Pioneer CLD-700 LaserDisc player, these machines are so rare in Denmark it’s a wonder I found 2 of the damn things in the basement of a secondhand store, bought one of them a while ago. Bear with me on the grime, I haven’t actually cleaned it yet

It has a door for DIRECT CD Operation, believe me if I had bothered to video it you would have seen what a joyous sight this little drawer is, all it allows me to do is play CDs on my TV’s speakers, which I don’t need, but there’s more to this …

BEHOLD!!!

Laserdisc is such a ridiculous format, analogue signal encoded onto what’s basically a huge fuckoff double-sided CD spinning at a 1800 RPM, what you get is silky smooth near-DVD-quality video divided into randomly accessible chapters coming from a format released in 1978. I really oughta get more of these discs, as of right now all I have is Swan Lake, but it makes for a really good demonstration

I am very proud of my Fire Emblem collection.

But today’s post is about my most recent acquisition.

If you look at those two giant squares laying down flat, those are called laserdiscs. Specifically of the FE OVA (it’s hilarious and available on youtube, go watch it and drink every time someone has a different accent.)

I had been ogling them on ebay for quite awhile, but this was after blowing a ton of money on other things. And it was November, the holidays were coming up. I had to get a grip on not buying superfluous shit.

On a date night, the man and I were at Jaggers and I discovered that the laserdiscs I had been watching were bought out from under my nose. I cursed the sky and exclaimed “I knew I should have snagged that deal when I saw it!” My man consoled me over our burger and fries, and we went on with our lovely night.

I assure you, there were many more times during November and December that I cursed about these darn laserdiscs. I don’t even need them, I’m just a brat with an unhealthy obsession.

Christmas 2025 rolls around, and the man hands me a very flat package. Lo and behold, HE was the dastard that bought them out from under me! And he listened to me bitch about them for over a month! And yet still gifted them to me for Christmas! We have been laughing about it ever since.

Definitely a blessed holiday, and one of the best stories of my collection.
