Cover of the manga “Battle Girl”, written by Moby Dick and Takashi Mitsuyo with artwork by Akihiro Ito, Bunendo Co., Ltd, August 1992.

A very intriguing manga which I had no idea existed until recently. This is a manga adaptation of the 1991 direct to video B-movie “Battle Girl” aka “The Living Dead in Tokyo Bay” or referred to as “Battle Girl: Tokyo Crisis Wars” in English on the sleeve of the Japanese VHS release. The film was widely bootlegged with English subtitles back in the late 1990s, but eventually got a legit DVD release from Synapse Films in 2010. More or less, it is a terrible zombie movie directed by Kazuo Komizu (director of the infamous 1980s exploitation horror films “Entrails of a Beauty” and “Entrails of a Virgin”) which includes wrestlers Cutie Suzuki, Devil Masami and Shinobu Kandori in key roles, as well as cult musicians like Kenji Ohtsuki in some minor roles.

Interestingly Yutaka Izubuchi is credited with designing the battle suit that lead character Keiko (played by Cutie Suzuki) wears. As noted, the manga was drawn by mangaka Akihiro Ito, a year prior to the debut of his career defining “Geobreeders” series. The “Battle Girl” manga was republished by Tokuma Shoten in January 2008, crediting Daisuke Serizawa with the story, which like the “Moby Dick and Takashi Mitsuyo” story credit in the original publication of the manga, is most likely a pseudonym for Kazuo Komizu.

Artwork by Haruhiko Mikimoto for a B2 sized bonus poster which came with pre-orders for the “Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross” laserdisc box set, Pioneer LDC, June 1991. The poster is unusual as it combines mecha and characters from the two other “Super Dimension” series; “Macross” and “Orguss”.
