Trump and Vance differ in their responses to latest Epstein files

The Justice Department last week released the final 3 million-plus Epstein files — but President Trump and Vice President JD Vance appear to diverge over what, if anything, should come next.

Why it matters: Trump suggested Tuesday it’s “time for the country to get onto something else,” even as Vance signaled openness to testimony on allegations in the latest files against former Prince Andrew.

The split underscores growing tension within the GOP over whether the Epstein disclosures should be investigated further or politically put to rest.
State of play: The vice president told the London-based Daily Mail Tuesday that he would be “certainly open to” Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor testifying before Congress, noting that U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer suggested he should do so after more files were released last week. But he said it would be Congress’ call.

Mountbatten-Windsor denies any wrongdoing and has never been charged with any crime, despite long-standing allegations regarding his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Files released last week that mention Mountbatten-Windsor have prompted some officials to once again question his relationship with Epstein. British police are looking into another woman’s allegations against him.

Meanwhile, Trump shrugged off the latest big names in the newest trove of files.

Zoom in: On Elon Musk and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick being mentioned in the files, Trump told reporters Tuesday: “You mentioned two names. I’m sure they’re fine. Otherwise it would have been major headlines.”

Trump maintained his position that he was never “friendly with Epstein.

“Now that nothing came out about me, other than it was a conspiracy against me, literally, by Epstein and other people, I think it’s time now for the country to maybe get onto something else,” he told reporters Tuesday.

Of note: Trump expressed sympathy for former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who have agreed to testify before Congress about Epstein after the House threatened to hold them in criminal contempt.

Bill Clinton’s name was featured frequently in the files, mostly tied to correspondence and flight logs connected to Epstein’s wider network. He denies any wrongdoing in the case.

“I think it’s a shame to be honest. I always liked him,” Trump said of Bill Clinton.whom he has previously attacked.

What they’re saying: The White House referred Axios’ Tuesday evening request for comment to the vice president’s office.

The vice president’s team did not immediately respond to Axios’ request for comment.

And those dog whistles signal the major themes of this election: hypermasculinity, declining birthrates, ethnonationalism—and no small measure of carefully curated misogyny. If you want to know some of the actors who red-pilled Vance, or at least those who flock to him, you need to meet the TheoBros.

As a Catholic, Vance knows better than to peddle this brand of gaslighting and agitation. Vance knows that, by virtue of her humanity, Good was endowed with inherent dignity, made in the image and likeness of God. Vance knows that only God can take life. Vance knows that protesting, fleeing or even interfering in an ICE investigation (which there is no evidence that Good did) does not carry a death sentence. Vance knows that lying and killing are sins. Vance knows. He doesn’t care. Vance’s twisted and wrongheaded view of Christianity has been repudiated by two popes. His Catholicism seems to be little more than a political prop, a tool only for his career ambitions and desire for power.

JD Vance: ICE has “absolute immunity”

Even the goddamned Redcoats didn’t have absolute immunity. The British soldiers who murdered five American Colonists during the Boston Massacre were arrested and faced trial (and were successfully defended by the future US President John Adams).

The US was founded on the principle that government must always be accountable to the people, that’s LITERALLY what the Constitution is.

TECH BROS, PHARAOHS & (wannabe) KINGS

I know that this information has been floating around for some time now, but I’ve never actually seen anyone on my timeline here talk about it in full. So if anyone needs some dots connected, here goes:

The first guy is Peter Thiel. Peter Thiel is a billionaire tech bro. Peter Thiel is angry at the world because, as a boy, he was told that all living things die and he thought, “Nope, not me.” It wasn’t the inevitability of death that bothered him, just that it would happen to HIM. He believed himself to be the One True Special Boy To Whom the Rules Do Not Apply.

When Peter Thiel finally found out that immortality is not a reasonable demand to make from the world, he came to the conclusion that the socio-economic-political system that had awarded him billions upon billions of dollars was a colossal failure and needed to be destroyed and replaced with a system that would make him a pharaoh, worshipped as a god and populated by slaves and chattel that he would rule over.

The second guy is Curtis Yarvin. Curtis Yarvin is an internet shitposting edgelord who got attention of his fellow shitposting edgelords in the early days of the internet by posting edgelord shitposts about how tech gurus are the true visionary leaders of the world, and so they should plot together to destroy democracy and create a new reich of tech bros who would rule fiefdoms like kings and own slaves.

Peter Thiel met Curtis Yarvin when Yarvin was working at a company Thiel owned. Thiel read Yarvin’s edgelord shitposts and said “I like the cut of your jib.” He gave Yarvin millions of dollars and a platform, and encouraged him to live his life to the fullest, posting millions of words on the internet every day, convincing all the tech lords of the world that they are the true master race, and that society should be treating them as such.

I know this all sounds insane, but, let me reiterate, this is not a conspiracy theory. This is all documented. We have texts between all these people proving direct connections between them and these ideas.

(Side note: the tale of how Peter Thiel became a billionaire is equally horrifying and creepy, but that’s a story for another day.)

So Peter Thiel wants to be a monarch, with serfs and chattel, so he found an anonymous internet crank who agreed with him and gave him millions of dollars to promote his ideas. And it worked! There was a thirsty audience of tech bros who couldn’t wait to be told that they were secretly a brotherhood of gods who should crush the world and remake it to their liking.

The problem with Yarvin’s vision of “Dark Enlightenment” (that’s what his edgelord shitpost philosophy is called) is that it’s so enormously ambitious that it would require a leader with access to “the maximum amount of violence” (his phrase) in order to work. That is, in order to usher in this new age of monarchy and slavery, the movement requires a president with a military on his side and the will to murder tens of millions of people in order to establish this new order of tech lord fiefdoms. That is to say, if this plan is going to ever work, it has to work NOW, while Peter Thiel still has years to enjoy his pharoahhood.

Again: this is not hyperbole. These are Thiel’s actual stated desires. Did Yarvin actually believe any of the stupid bullshit he wrote? Who cares? If you’re paid millions of dollars to come up with batshit political theories, that’s what you’ll do, especially if you think everyone else in the world is a drooling moron who won’t be fit to shine your shoes when the shit comes down. Thiel’s millions encouraged Yarvin to write, which gave the rest of the tech community the illusion that this was a widely-held belief.

The third guy is JD Vance, the current Vice-President. Peter Thiel also invested millions in the career of JD Vance, and got him installed as the Vice-President to an 80-year-old stroke victim with multiple life-threatening conditions.

We now leave the realm of known facts and enter into the magical kingdom of prognostication. If I had to guess, and I guess I have to, I’d say that Thiel, after shoveling money into Trump’s coffers for a decade, is using him to clumsily put all the infrastructure he needs in place and take all the heat for that. At that point, either Trump will die of natural causes or will be assassinated by someone whom the media will call a deranged leftist, and he will ascend into sainthood. In the period of national mourning, Vance will start putting Yarvin’s plan into play. Much of it has already been done: Project 2025 was based on Yarvin’s writing.

How much of this plan could possibly succeed? That’s a different question. But this is my best guess for what the plan is.
