❝ my icarus, with all your warnings — 404: heart not found — and all those so sorry signs — better luck next time! — my icarus, with all your faults — strapping wings of wax to my hopes — my icarus, laughing, pulling me along — and the earth falling away beneath my feet — my icarus, my icarus, watching me fly too close to the sun again—

and i fall—

and i fall—

and i fall— ❞

icarus

i am obsessed with the story of Icarus

he was trapped for so long

and finally

      finally

    free

free as a bird

or maybe he thought he was one

people say he was stupid for ignoring his father’s warning

but really

if you could fly

feel Helios’s kisses on your shoulders

your neck and face and back

feel the wind below you

wouldn’t you fly higher too?

if you could feel the salt spray from Poseidon’s depths below,

and see Ouranos’ expanse above you,

wouldn’t you fly higher?

if you could go where no mortal had gone before,

wouldn’t you push the limit?

his father warned him not to fly too high,

but it was him who put Icarus in that position

who allowed him to fly

he could finally escape

and there was his father

dragging him down

      down

  down

like gravity

Icarus didn’t fly too close to the sun because he was greedy or foolish

but because he was free

and maybe he laughed as he fell

maybe his final moments were happy

moments of freedom, and warmth, and light,

his love for Helios

and if his last moments were happy and light,

rather than living under his father’s control,

his weight

who are we to call it a tragedy?

who are we to define Icarus as foolish,

when he chose godly love,

romance,

Helios,

he chose freedom,

and warmth

being immortalized,

literally falling for Helios

being known for his love and his hope,

he chose passion and life and death and feeling alive and falling

feeling alive

even if just for a few minutes

so who are we to define his happiness as a tragedy?

Landscape with the Fall of Icarus

According to Brueghel
when Icarus fell
it was spring

a farmer was ploughing
his field
the whole pageantry

of the year was
awake tingling
near

the edge of the sea
concerned
with itself

sweating in the sun
that melted
the wings’ wax

unsignificantly
off the coast
there was

a splash quite unnoticed
this was
Icarus drowning
By William Carlos Williams

“Everyone says that he fell because he flew too close to the sun,” his father said, “but he flew, do you see what I mean, Son? He was able to fly. It doesn’t matter if you fall, if you were a bird for even just a few seconds.” - Agustina Bazterrica, Tender is the Flesh, 2017

Recognizing a parallel between 3 of my favorite romances, which is when person A comes onto person B, who is too preoccupied to reciprocate right now, but absolutely intends to cash in on that Later

Thousands of years later, read by millions of people, a tale known by heart by society, and yet I still want to rip my heart out over the last few passages of the myth of Daedalus and Icarus.

Shh, little boy, no need to cry. I will hold you in my arms, surround you with my care for you.

You have fallen far and you have fallen hard. Little boy, how did you feel when you flew? Little boy, close your eyes and rest your head in my lap. The seagrass will bend and be a pillow to you, the fish will swarm and be your blanket.

Shh, little boy, soon you will know peace. Your father cries out to you, yet he’ll never reach you.

He will dig a grave for the son he’ll never bury and he’ll give me the name of the son he’ll never bury.

Shh, little Icarus.
