icarus
i am obsessed with the story of Icarus
he was trapped for so long
and finally
finally
free
free as a bird
or maybe he thought he was one
people say he was stupid for ignoring his father’s warning
but really
if you could fly
feel Helios’s kisses on your shoulders
your neck and face and back
feel the wind below you
wouldn’t you fly higher too?
if you could feel the salt spray from Poseidon’s depths below,
and see Ouranos’ expanse above you,
wouldn’t you fly higher?
if you could go where no mortal had gone before,
wouldn’t you push the limit?
his father warned him not to fly too high,
but it was him who put Icarus in that position
who allowed him to fly
he could finally escape
and there was his father
dragging him down
down
down
like gravity
Icarus didn’t fly too close to the sun because he was greedy or foolish
but because he was free
and maybe he laughed as he fell
maybe his final moments were happy
moments of freedom, and warmth, and light,
his love for Helios
and if his last moments were happy and light,
rather than living under his father’s control,
his weight
who are we to call it a tragedy?
who are we to define Icarus as foolish,
when he chose godly love,
romance,
Helios,
he chose freedom,
and warmth
being immortalized,
literally falling for Helios
being known for his love and his hope,
he chose passion and life and death and feeling alive and falling
feeling alive
even if just for a few minutes
so who are we to define his happiness as a tragedy?
