Good Night Oppy || 2022

#GoodNightOppy. “It’s just a documentary. They’re just robots,” they said. Then why do I find it so hard to stop myself from sobbing at the end? This was a solid one. Well done.

Good Night Oppy tells the story of the mission to Mars of two rovers, Spirit and Opportunity. Estimated to only stay online for 90 days, they were tasked to find evidence that drinking water once existed in the red planet.

Space exploration has always been among my deepest fascinations. That’s why Interstellar holds a special place in my hard.

Most of the time, documentaries tend to pack a plethora of data and facts in such limited time. While it leaves me in awe, sometimes, there are moments of information overload.

What’s nice about this one is that they didn’t drown us with scientific facts. This is Spirit and Opportunity’s story – their mission, their birth, the team behind them, and how they exponentially exceeded expectations before they went to sleep forever.

It’s a story that, in a way, humanized Spirit and Opportunity. Their accomplishments, struggles, and eventually, their aging and slow deterioration. I couldn’t help but root for them.

This kind of storytelling allows you to be with them in their journey, and also somehow relate to them and the scientists and engineers that led the mission.

Good Night Oppy is nice because they made it sentimental, and it was as it should be. 10/10

Opportunity

I’ve always had this idea about how souls work. I think, if a human loves something enough, for long enough, that something can grow a soul too. Whether it’s your favorite teddy bear or the shadiest tree in your backyard or a tiny robot a million miles a way, I think it’s perfectly reasonable to say it loves you back.

NASA announced the end of the existing possibilities to re-establish contacts with its Mars Rover Opportunity and consequently declared the end of its mission. Oppy, as it’s affectionately called, interrupted communications after June 10, 2018 following the global storm that covered the planet Mars with a blanket of dust that prevented it from obtaining energy from its solar panels. This extraordinary mission ends in this sad way because caused by an extrnal cause after over 15 Earth’s years in which it collected a wealth of information on Mars.
