The recent popularity of right wing media in Australia and the United States has seen the emergence of new platforms and networks. Unfortunately, these are not being staffed and fronted by actual journalists in the main. Op/eds have become the product of choice in the media over the last couple of decades. Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp publications and shows have led the way in this populist approach to current affairs and the news. Sky News Australia and Fox News are chock full of former right wing political hacks and staffers. Objectivity has become an arcane idea laughed about at editorial and production meetings in search of eyeballs and ratings. Therefore, you cannot trust the right wing media.
Meta’s Bold Dance with Chaos: Embracing Free Speech or Free Fall?
In a groundbreaking move that has left many scratching their heads, Meta, the tech giant formerly known as Facebook, has decided to take a daring leap into what can only be considered the Wild West of the digital age. In a stroke of genius—or perhaps pure madness—Meta has taken a giant step back in time by unraveling its detailed content moderation policies, especially those pesky paragraphs that…
Take fact checking out of that intimate, human setting, turn it into an industrial program of outsourcing, crowdsourcing, or automation, and it falls apart. It becomes a parody of itself. The desire to “scale” fact checking, to mechanize the arbitration of truth, is just another example of the tragic misunderstanding that lies at the core of Silicon Valley’s entire, grandiose attempt to remake society in its own image: that human relations get better as they get more efficient. A community, we seem fated to learn over and over again, is not a network.
Imagine if Charles Darwin was still alive today and how his groundbreaking scientific work on evolution would be treated by neocons and MAGA types. Social media would light up like the site of an atomic bomb explosion. Don’t check the facts: Inconvenient scientific truths. We have got to the stage where people are choosing which facts they will acknowledge, as if they are choosing from a range of colours for an item in an online store. Terms like ‘alternative truths’ have been invented to describe the current situation. If we cannot agree on what is fact and what is not we are in big trouble. Now that Facebook will not “fact check” information posted there, it’s even more important for us to fact check our own postings. Use these 7 resources for responsible sharing on social media-THINK before you post or share .
In another post I shared 9 strategies for responsible social media posting and sharing. Here are the online resources I used and others for you to check out.
Take A Seat — Chuck Sigars

Meta’s War on Truth: Why I Went Dark on Facebook Yesterday, and Why I’m Coming Back Today
Yesterday, I made a decision that felt both necessary and heartbreaking. I went dark on Facebook, without explanation, as an act of protest. It was my response to hearing Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, declare that fact-checkers were a problem in the world due to “political bias.” His solution? Remove them entirely from Meta’s platforms, leaving Facebook, Instagram, and Threads wide open to…
