if there’s one thing I’ve really learned from reading about historical references to pagan gods it’s this: write things down. write down their names, your prayers, the ways that you choose to honor them. Not just in digital platforms like this — do it in physical forms. Paper and paint and fiber arts are good; metal and clay and stone are more enduring. If you’re at all into sculpture or metal working, include words in your art.
There are so many gods where the only thing we have left of them is a single reference to their name from a votive offering inscription. So many whose names were overwritten with the names of bigger gods from more powerful empires. Figures in sculptures we can’t identify. Names written down that we don’t have any imagery or iconography or stories to attach to.
Thinking about how many more have been lost entirely makes my heart hurt.
You don’t have to share your practice or personal spiritual workings with any living person, of course. But I just think about all the gods whose names and stories we don’t know anymore, and it makes me think that perhaps one of the best offerings that we can give the gods now is longevity in human memory. The evidence that they are known here, and loved.
