We finally get to see Bijou do magic! I spent a lot of time trying to decide on the look and feel of magic for this world. But this is just one character’s particular take on resonance magic… we’ll see a lot more mind-bending magical shenanigans later in the chapter!

Sure! Post-Crisis Comet basically only shows up in the 1996 Supergirl series by Peter David, sort of scattered throughout. She first shows up in #10 as a stand-up comic going by Andy Jones, though her real name is Andrea Martinez:

Supergirl #10

The bald guy is Linda’s (Supergirl) friend Cutter…and Andy’s ex-husband. His reaction in the last panel here is because he knows that Andy’s a lesbian and why she wants Linda to be the one to show her around, but isn’t going to say anything (probably more because he thinks it’s funny than so as not to out Andy, but the end result is better than if he was like “GUESS WHAT, LINDA”). Although Andy’s haircut is doing a lot of heavy lifting for 1997 anyway.

(Andy does eventually ask Linda out, and Linda politely declines, for the record.)

In #19, Supergirl meets the town’s new hero, Comet, who has flight, super speed, ice powers, and unspecified and sort of dubious love powers:

Unsurprisingly, she does not immediately guess that he and Andy are the same person!

Finally, in #26, we get the reveal and the on-page transformation:

This, by the way, is exactly the same thing Linda was doing at the time - switching from petite brunette Linda to tall blonde Supergirl (who arguably doesn’t have a gender anyway). That’s because they are both “Earth-born angels,” i.e. 2 of 3 divine figures who represent God’s feminine energy on Earth, who gained divine power when a superpowered being sacrificed themselves by merging with a dying mortal to save their life.

In Linda’s case, Supergirl was a protoplasmic being from another dimension called Matrix who merged with a dying Linda Danvers who had been sacrificed (uh…consensually) by a cult. She’s the angel of fire.

In Andy’s case, the original Andy Jones was a jockey who got in a terrible horse accident and was approached by shady scientists who gave him superpowers via horse DNA and he became Comet, and then merged with Andrea who was dying because she decided to commit semi-passive suicide by climbing Mt. Everest solo after her homophobic family cut ties with her. He’s the angel of love.

(There’s a third angel, Blythe, the angel of light. She and Comet end up together at the end of the comic, which is nice.)

Comics, everybody!

I love this series a lot but this is one of the loopier aspects of it. There’s also a little boy running around who may or may not be God. THERE’S A LOT GOING ON.

Anyway, I do recommend exploring the 1996 Supergirl series. Andy is sometimes handled a little clunkily, but she’s also one of the first queer superheroes in comics and you can tell she was written with really earnest intent. Presumably since everything is canon in the DCU now she’s somewhere out there doing stand-up and having horse DNA to this very day!

3I/ATLAS, News?

An Interstellar random space rock would have the most common metal found in the Universe, as we know it, as part of it? Wouldn’t it, I mean, what would you expect a random space rock to be made of, but the most common elements in the Universe, as we know it?

I hope you understand, we humans don’t know much about the Universe, if it is infinite, so I added, as we know it, because in the whole…

Ello mortals I’m kinda bored and I have nothing to do right now as I sit in bed so ya just random shit is going on I mean I was thinking about comet some more and I really want to start joining in on rps but if course my brain is like wait what if I make it awkward because I’m still figuring out how I wanna portray comet but I think they would be very blunt about things and act like they know how stuff works on earth even if they don’t because it’s basic knowledge right? Apparently not I also need to figure out more about comets backstory so I may post more about it later but uh I do think a few of the animatronics would know about comet not being human.. speaking of comet being a alien I need to pick a name for the planet they’re from so many ideas would be great

Objectified Theory Time: Morrigan is the Cloak

Comet’s few focus chapters feature Morrigan oddly frequently, and I believe there is a reason for this.

In Chapter 37 “Uncanny Valley” Comet is seen to have gathered the skulls and feathers of Morrigan’s dead sentinels and to have begun implementing them in their crafts, particularly a knife and a cloak which they wear for their Cold Wave design.

In Comet’s most recent chapter (chapter 93, Nightcrawler) Comet dreams of her disembodied Cloak burning the ID_Shroud that had been haunting her, only for her to wake and see fire outside and a shadowy figure (likely the cloak) silhouetted by it

While Comet’s perspective is not truly reliable due to her affliction causing her to experience dramatic and deadly hallucinations, I’ve come to believe that her vision of “The Nightcrawler” has a greater basis in reality than it may initially appear.

First let’s look at the aesthetics here. The claws of the nightcrawler and that of Morrigan bear aesthetic similarity. In addition, we know that when Morrigan’s sentinels recombine she enters her true form.

While the sentinels Comet collected were seemingly dead, in sewing them together Comet has in a sense mechanically recombined them.

While them being dead does throw a wrench in the theory, keep in mind that Spool battered the brains of several sentinels and they were still able to be assimilated even though it’s been established that dead objects don’t be assimilated (i.e why the extremely fragile will typically be killed rather than be fully assimilated). It could be the case that because the object to who the sentinels are attached is still alive, they don’t truly die.

Alright, now for some evidence as to why I think this is, beyond just the Nightcrawler comic:

Comet knows things that that THEY shouldn’t, but Morrigan would

The most damning example is Comet’s dream after Morrigan’s assimilation where they dream of the sentinels combining into Morrigan’s true object (a tree). While the vivid nightmare is almost certainly a result of Comet’s Apparatia, Comet should not know what Morrigan looks like.

Morrigan is a highly secretive King even to those in her own district, Turtleshell never truly even meets her. Comet doesn’t even seem to recognize Morrigan’s sentinels as extensions of the King, journaling about them calling them “large corvids.”

It’s also worth noting that this dream ends with Comet being eaten by the crow skull on her hood.

And it doesn’t end there, let’s talk about a short scene chapter 55 “Restless”

In this scene, Comet is trying to whittle wooden sculptures but is stressed and restless and so tosses it aside. Before they do, there’s this quick close up.

Is it me, or is the focus of this panel, and the thing all the dark lines gravitate towards, not Comet, but the skull? And let’s take a peak at what Comet was actually carving.

Those who are already aware may know where I’m going with this, but to those uninitiated let me introduce you to the rabbit Easter egg.

There’s more examples than this, but know that there is an oddly persistent symbol in Objectified of a white rabbit with one ear flopped over. While the significance of this symbol is yet unclear, here’s a line in Turtleshell’s journal that directly links Morrigan’s sentinels with white rabbits

In conclusion: I think that Morrigan, due to her established nature as a telepath like her sister, Comet has somehow been receiving information from Morrigan through her cloak- either as a sort of psychic bleed through or a deliberate effort by Morrigan to attempt to communicate with Comet.

The latter may be more likely, as while black birds are an omen of death for most, they are not for Comet.

Interstellar Comet 3I/Atlas Has Another Surprise: It’s Full of Alcohol

Comet 3I/Atlas is now heading out of the solar system and into interstellar space, but scientists are still analyzing the data it left behind as it passed through our cosmic neighborhood. A new study, still under review, reveals a surprising detail: The comet is laden with alcohol.
Observations from the ALMA telescope in Chile’s Atacama Desert show that the coma of this celestial object is…

Theory Time

Alright, here’s a thought which might be silly.

It’s unclear to me how much of the nightcrawler comic is just Comet’s hallucinations from her Apparatia so grain of salt, but here’s an incredibly literal interpretation:

The Nightcrawler seems to be Comet’s cloak moving independently of her, and their cloak is made from Morrigan’s sentinels. We know as of the newest comic, Morrigan isn’t yet fully assimilated.

The nighcrawler also possesses hands which look very much like what we see of Morrigan’s in her full appearance in Reach of Ice

Could Comet, in creating a fashionable cloak against the cold, have accidentally created a small Morrigan homunculus that crawls around while they sleep?

Over 120 images of interstellar comet captured by Jupiter spacecraft. 3/ATLAS revealed like never before | BBC Sky at Night Magazine

The European Space Agency has released a new image of interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, captured by one of its spacecraft on the way to Jupiter.
The image was captured when the comet was close to the Sun, spewing out dust and gas.
In the image, scientists spotted a bright halo of gas surrounding the comet’s head, known as the coma.
A long tail is visible too, along with rays, jets streams and…
