Movie Review: KPop Demon Hunters

KPop Demon Hunters is about a girl group who are more than just entertainers. They have demons to fight.

I admit I’m one of those late to the ball when it came to watching KPop Demon Hunters. I have not been too excited to see the latest animated films in recent years. What got me to see it is the big awards show buzz and how this film made some hit records chart well in the last few months. I…

@saucepanguy

Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!!!!!!!! It’s an element from her early design that I stopped doing for a while but brought back. Cho is half-oni/half-nymph and I thought the jagged edge kind of resembled the edges of some leaves and would be an interesting feature for nymphs in the setting. I think it kinda ties her very rough aggressive persona to her also being very in touch with nature.

Oni have big chunky pointed ears but nymphs have a lot of variance in the edges and can be more rounded like petals.

I think she probably would enjoy jewelry making and piercing which are common arts in oni culture but her eventual conquest of and ruling of a kingdom later in life would probably cause her to put this in the back of her mind. She actively does floral arrangement and after having children spends time teaching one of them magic.

4. Do they have allergies, intolerances, weird reactions or dislikes so strong they might as well be any of the above? Are they also yours?

Cho 🌵: I think it’s fair to say that, despite providing the cult with the “Nectar of Divine Perception” (that the player character must gather in the preparation event), he does. not. like. taking. it.

If nothing else, because he hates the “Undesired Visions” aspect of it.

For a botanist versed in cultivating drugs, he sure knows he’s not supposed to take them. (Though a certain bug in the game might insist on there being certain exceptions to the rule 😂)

As far as food is concerned, Cho doesn’t have any allergies in particular.

Speaking of food, did you know that some Choya tribes have shown cannibalistic tendencies?

Did you know that Choya are VERY NUTRITIOUS, too?

8. What’s the first important bit of lore you came up with for them? Did it ever change?

Poi 🫒: The biggest chunk of his story and the very reason he was created for is still canon and still relevant. I did tweak things for him over the years, but those were largely minor details in the grand scheme of things to make everything weave together more smoothly. What DID change, was the character himself of his own accord. He wants to change and become a better person, BECAUSE of the things he did when he was initially created. He is very much an advocate of “don’t retcon my mistakes, how else am I going to learn from them?” :)

Cho 🌵: Cho is so young a character, there’s not a lot of him yet that I could have changed conceptually, except for the fact that the way he initially appeared to me cannot be 100% captured by in-game character models and fashion choices (It’s very close though!!!).
He’s still very much in the “First Draft” or “Beta phase” of his life. He’s so young even, I think I can dig up… yes xD

…and nothing about that has changed.

On the contrary, canon even SHOWERED him with opportunities. This was JUST before we learned about the Castoran Choya. And then Anet comes and creates a character like Avyn for him to interact with. I think it is safe to say - my hand was forced.

I think it should be fair to mention that a lot of brainstorming with friends was involved regarding this little guy. When the first Beta for the VoE specializations came around I decided to use him as a template for one of the test characters to see if he could be visually captured… and the rest is well… very young history xD

13. How would they feel about you (their creator)?

Poi 🫒: I think for Poi this question is… very, very dependent on when it would be asked.

I did put him through a LOT during his entire existence, but I tried to make up for it in his adult years… in a way? In the mind of a character like him no atonement will ever be enough, but he’s got a support circle, he’s gotten a chance to break with his past and especially in the most recent years found a “purpose” that I think he would be thankful for getting, even with all the hardships it took to get there.

While “kid” or “teen” Poisen would probably whine and declare a righteous feud on me, “adult” Poisen - at the risk of maybe sounding sappy - has a sense of age and wisdom to him that makes him recognize and cherish the kind of growth that these circumstances enabled.

Cho 🌵: Cho on the very other end of the spectrum is still a very new character, I don’t think he would have gripes with me, more than he has with the Inquest itself, and would - becoming of an analytical Asura mind - consider me more “a person trying to do a decent job.”

…and if that means adhering to the messed-up ideologies of the Inquest that the canon the game itself provides than all the better for it.

(Honestly, I tried to write FLUFF for him a while back, but after some research in the gw2 wiki the entire thing turned into a horror prompt instead. Ooops I guess?)

Cho the Fox (roly polys no nanakorobi yaoki)

The Cho is an antagonistic Roly-Poly from the Roly-Polys series. Cho is a tall, lanky red/purple fox creature sporting longer limbs, pink abs, and a bushy tan tail. He has 5 toes on both feet, Cho’s tan-colored hands have fingers longer and thinner than a human. His glaring yellow eyes with deep periwinkle irises give Pon some misfortune. He has a small buttoned nose and six pink whiskers as a “moustache”. Cho is mean-spirited and unfair, and usually loves to pull cruel pranks on Pon along with a few other Roly-Polys. The fox, with his slightly scary, sly gaze that always seems to hint at tricks to come. It’s just like the saying “The eyes have one language everywhere,” and it’s true that Cho is always up to some trick or another. I guess that’s the star he was born under so he can’t help it. The object of Cho’s tricks is usually Pon. Cho says that it’s because he gets so cross when he sees Pon just sitting around doing nothing. Cho is impatient by nature so he can’t stand seeing anyone moving around in slow motion. It’s wrong to try and force someone to do what you want them to, but it doesn’t seem to worry Pon so maybe they make a good combination after all. Thanks for made joneoyvilde03

Day 2- Old OC

Cho (left) is one of the oldest OCs that I have, along with Meva. In a sentence, he is a hateful, bitter narcissist that got everything he ever wanted and still isn’t happy, because nothing could ever put joy in his heart. Except being cruel, sometimes that gets a laugh out of him.

His hobbies include reading, gambling, drinking, being a violent husband and father, and causing economic crises. He dislikes animals, ESPECIALLY Nobi (a type of eiding animal). He is actually extremely afraid of them, and he also dislikes common decency and empathy.

Chapter 1158’s cover is here! What to say about this cover? A bit of everything really.

“Here lies the Heroic Pirate of Justice.”

Starting with some cool linguistic info, the order of the kanji for “Kozuki” is able to be flipped and translated as “Gekko.” Kozuki translating to Light Moon, and Gekko meaning Moonlight. It seems Moria changed his name at some point. That’s an interesting layer to his character, as are the familial ties to Wano.

Everyone looks so stylish or cool here. The Ringo covers have all been such winners in terms of composition and this group continues to be wonderful to see each time.

I love the flipped perspective from the prior cover. As well as the lower angle so we can see the shrine that was obscured due to the high angle of 1157’s. The idea of flipping one thing to another being done both visually and with Moria’s Gekko/Kozuki name is pretty fun.

Where was Moria when Izo and Kiku and Cho were children I wonder? Did they ever encounter each other back then or at any other point during the Oden backstory? Did they live in the same village in the past? Did Cho and Kiku help spread the stories about Moria dying and disappearing without a trace, so he could leave. Something like that would be similar to stories of Shakky dying of love sickness being spread, so she could leave Amazon Lily to pursue her own goals.

Oden was away from Wano for 5 years if I recall, 30 years ago to 25 years ago, and we see very little of the country during those years.

It’s a very wide window of time to show events in Wano from Moria’s perspective and he seems to have been in and out of the country many times, which makes many more connections possible. Given the difficulties of reaching the country at all, closed policies, and fact that Kaido taking over would have made that more difficult, leaving and returning often feels special.

As for where the group goes next, I could see several potential options. To name a few, meeting Onimaru, visiting more graves, traveling to the site of Moria and Kaido’s battle, meeting back up with the dino siblings, the list goes on. There are a lot of directions things could go from here and all of them sound interesting.

To jump back to a few prior scenes for an idea.

I like seeing the difference in how these two react to Zoro having Shusui. Kiku doesn’t say anything though she would recognize the sword of course, while Kin'emon questions if Zoro took it. Hiyori was too young to remember much from 23 years ago, though Kiku was 19, and Kin'emon 33 when it was taken.

Oda choosing to have Kiku not question Zoro or say anything about Shusui in chapter 914 fits with her early characterization of not yet fully trusting Luffy and Zoro to give away her connections. Is it possible that she knew who took Shusui?

Moira!!! A Kozuki?

Seriously, it really shows how closed off if they think he’s dead and is a hero who died in battle. Also how is he Kozuki when he was born in West Blue. There is a story there. I want to know more.

It’s a break week though I still want to talk about the Wano cover arc. After seeing more of Kaido in the current flashback, there’s a lot to say.

Cho, Kiku, and Yamato are paying respects to a hero who fought Kaido… as the dino siblings are building a snow tribute to Kaido. It makes for a notable contrast of interests.

One idea I like is Yamato realizing that following a strict road map to “being Oden” isn’t needed to achieve the goals he wants, being free and wanting to be loved by Wano’s people. During the surrogate pilgrimage is a good time to learn that there are ways other than being Oden to achieve both.

At points, I think Yamato has viewed the path to those goals in a strict or limited way, not unlike a younger Kaido seeking to be Joyboy as a way of bringing about change. But Kaido eventually realized he couldn’t be Joyboy, and he became jaded. He became so caught up in the grand story of Joyboy that he lost his sense of self, and lost sight of his goals. Yamato may end up going down a similar path if he continues insisting on becoming Oden. While Luffy, who isn’t interested in being Oden, is more free and is loved by the people of Wano more than Yamato is at this time.

So we know that such insistence about being Oden as the only way to have what he wants shares has some overlap with what Kaido tells to King here. However, in spite of Joyboy being a figure who stories are told about centuries later, we know that Joyboy failed, otherwise, the World Government wouldn’t have been formed in the first place. And he wrote a message of apology to Poseidon.

Doing things the same way that Joyboy did will likely lead to a repeated failure, and the same is true in regards to Oden. But the stories told about both don’t convey their failures, only their successes. Oden achieved a lot and is remembered as a hero, though ultimately failed to defeat Kaido and liberate his country. There are things he could have done differently or better. Oden perhaps even feels guilty over some of his decisions and actions, while the stories Yamato knows of him only speak of his successes.

Seeing Yamato proving that he’s not doing the same thing as Kaido did, seeking to imitate a figure of legend, Oden/Joyboy, to the Beast Pirates could really go a long way. Ulti and Page One at least seem to have no qualms showing reverence to Kaido at this point.

Though similarly to Kaido not knowing Joyboy, the person behind the stories, Yamato didn’t know Oden, and it’s doubtful that Ulti and Page One will be reformed only though stories, they’d need to learn who Oden really was, which only Cho and Kiku know of this group. Or they will need to learn more about who Yamato is aside from the Oden stuff. Lots to ponder until the continuation of these stories.
