Bunty! Can I rant a bit here. I hated, just loathed the way she was handled. DO WE REALLY NEED ANOTHER LOVE INTEREST? First its not cute. We already know she’s not gonna get with Newt. So why do I want to see a rather kind character get her heart broken?
No, you know what. It actually wouldn’t be awful if she did have feelings if it wasn’t like the thrid female character we got to be madly in love with Newt and doesn’t get her own happy ending. (RIP Leta)
Which on Leta- I assumed from the first movie that Newt was the one with the feelings. And Leta took advantage of that. That feels were changed after the incident at school. Now that would have made sense. And actually if that was the case then it wouldn’t make her ties with Theseus a joke.
Honestly Theseus and Leta actually do seem like a good match. Each can actually handle the other. Keep the other in balance. Leta is a very troubled character because the issues brought back up by her brother. But that doesn’t mean she is always like that. Before that she was likely very content. Happy even. But thats another story.
But back to Bunty. I’m suppose to believe in the first scene they have together that Newt is unaware of her feelings? Oh so Newt is an idiot now? When I watched it his dismissing of her for the night felt like annoyances. He heard her say, “Take your shirt off.” Like come on now. Which yeah I get its awkward when its a one sided feeling. I don’t blame Newt. He doesn’t have to bow to every attempt of a relationship. But it’s so awful to watch it.
Perhaps if written by someone else it would have been cute. Hype up that Newt was worth love. Or even shown a more dashing side of why Women fall for Newt. Because as much as he is good with animals he lacks it with people.
I really do like Newt as a character. I do. He breaks the mold. He’s kind to those different then him. But honestly I don’t buy why Tina falls for him. There was nothing that didn’t feel forced from the first movie.
She just seemed annoyed by him. (I mean with Newt. I know it was a rough patch in her life.) Her looks are judgemental in every shot when looking at Newt. Then on top of the building her glances at him are softer. Her options chanced. He’s saved her from death. But that doesn’t fall in line with romance. It falls in line with respect. And it makes more sense that then she understand his different ways but it doesn’t make sense she have feelings.
It should have been something she would grow to do. Tina would like him. Tina is more wordly. As an Auror she should have seen the gritty side of life. Known what a differences Newt is.
But back to Bunty. They did improve by the third film where she is actually clever and moves about the world. An actual character and not another person in a haram. I was proud of her. She showed spirit. Being brave in the face of danger.
But like can we get justice for the women of this series?
