Play retro games for free

Playretrogames.com a website full of retro games from the past. You can relive classics or try games that older generations grew up playing in their free time. The site includes titles from Atari 2600, Game Boy, Sega, and more.

There are a lot of well-known games available, though some have been taken down due to DMCA complaints and can’t be played anymore. That was a bit of a bummer since I wanted to play one of the Zelda games, but I was able to find another game I liked.

The games run right in your browser, so there’s no download needed.

Hit the jump to check it out!

Top 3 Browser Games I Played as a Kid

There was an era when the internet was a place rather than a constant presence in the air. It was at the desktop in the family computer room, and this desktop could really only do so much, especially when it came to games.

Luckily for kids everywhere, browser games could be accessed by pretty much every browser, and they were free — unless you were Webkinz!

Because of this, I never played Webkinz, but I did play a whole bunch of other browser games. Virtual worlds that came after a “www” were my online third spaces as a kid. Here were some of my favorites:

Millsberry

Nobody seems to remember Millsberry. Hell, I don’t even remember Millsberry all that much, but what I do remember was that it was once my absolute favorite site. Waking up early in the morning just to feed and dress up my buddy, decorate my virtual house, and play cereal-based games.

The funny thing is that I don’t remember how I even found out about Millsberry, but it mustn’t have been from anything relating to cereal, because I only found out the site was basically made to advertise cereal years after I stopped playing.

Well, I suppose it’s proof that just because something’s a commercial doesn’t mean it can’t be inspired and joyful. If Millsberry Rewritten were ever going to push through, I’d be front of the line to play it again. (Though, let’s be real, I’d probably play for a week and then go on a year-long hiatus before I get nostalgic and decide to revisit.)

Club Penguin

Everyone in our elementary class played Club Penguin. It was the absolute coolest (pun intended) place to be. However, back as a kid, it never really seemed all that fun unless you had a paid membership, so all the rich kids in class that had said membership boasted about it like no other.

Still, it was fun to have a place to chat with friends before we had WhatsApp or Messenger, and the games definitely too. (My favorites were the ones where you fished and where you caught coffee bags.) I also tried to tip the iceberg and felt like I seriously missed out when I found out the iceberg had tipped only years after the fact.

However, most of my time on Club Penguin was spent doing the secret agent missions, which I thought were so much fun, although I’m pretty sure I used walkthroughs for when they get too hard… which wasn’t very far into each mission.

Neopets

Out of all the browser games of the 2000s, Neopets was my absolute favorite.

In fact, out of all the games both on this list and not, from Moshi Monsters to Pandanda to Poptropica, Neopets is the only one that never fully left my life. Every other title, I forgot about once I hit seventh grade, but Neopets would constantly re-enter my days on an unpredictable basis — one year, I didn’t visit the site at all, the next, I’d be collecting avatars and saving Neopoints like nobody’s business.

What I’m most thankful for, however, is how Neopets introduced me to graphic design and HTML and CSS coding, and nowadays, its main contribution skill-wise is giving me opportunities to practice my drawing skills. Yup, that’s right, I’m currently on another Neopian era, and not a day goes by that I don’t visit the site.

Who knows how long it’ll last? Who knows how long the site will last? (Despite all the rockiness, I’m rooting for its future success.) Right now, though, I’m glad the site has survived for this long, because wow, is it nice to have this old-internet site in my life again.
