The POV was inspired by Saul Steinberg’s famous New Yorker cover, but the details are pure Mad Magazine, specifically Brooklyn geniuses like the great Bill Elder and Al Jaffee. ❤️❤️❤️

Recently spotted as I was watching Broad City — a print I did a while back called “Dog vs. Hat,” a tribute to Monopoly game battles royale in the style of a classic boxing poster. (Prints still available via the blah-blah in the blah👆)

The top hat was my favored token. (Of course; what am I, a farmer?) That tough little Scottie dog was chosen by others. The games were fierce. Occasionally, Top Hat prevailed. Other times, well….

Why was it on Broad City? Because the production team wanted to populate the show with Brooklyn-made art, which was cool of them. So they bought some of mine. Thanks, @broadcity !

A recent commission for a wonderful client in California. BAM — the Brooklyn Academy of Music. (Ink and watercolor on 16” by 20” 300-pound Fabriano paper)

I’ve walked by it a hundred times, but the trick is getting far enough back to see and appreciate the detail of this beautiful gem. So many touches of orange and green, especially in the cornice.

And I’ve been creating curious little components, slowly. Each is a small sculpture of its own doomed to be swallowed up in this cacophony. I’ve spent hours crocheting tubes only to lose them in this colorful box. I say “Those arms are much too long!” Until I stand beside and see my arms there, the same length. It’s a crazy thing to do.

It’s really the act of making that I’m addicted to. The resulting object is superfluous. True, it gathers things I needed to carry for awhile, things I couldn’t leave. But then I never really need those things. I’m reminded of a large totemic sculpture, the last time I was compelled to do this, in my apartment in Ridgewood: after a frenzy of assemblage and a few weeks of looking at it I suddenly cut it up into sections and sent it to the landfill, where much of its content had been headed in the first place. I’m already thinking about what the end of this piece might entail and how insane I will feel when I remember making it.
