Every day, something was going to fall through the cracks, run late, or be wrong. If he paid enough attention, he could come back and deal with most of it later. Collect the crumbs. Run a little faster. Correct the inaccuracies. Bat cleanup.

#Attenzione al flusso di input/Attention to the flow of input

“Quando siete consapevoli, prestate attenzione al flusso di input proveniente dal mondo esterno, selezionate, decidete, organizzate ed elaborate operando delle scelte su che cosa accettare e che cosa invece rifiutare.”

Deepak Chopra

“When you are mindful, you pay attention to the flow of input from the outside world, selecting, deciding, organizing, and processing, making choices about what to…

A Beautiful Act of Devotion

While Jesus was eating at the home of Simon the leper, something unexpected happened. The Gospel of Gospel of Mark records the moment this way:

“While he was eating, a woman came in with a beautiful alabaster jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard. She broke open the jar and poured the perfume over His head.” (Mark 14:3)

At first glance, it seems like a simple act. But the more you…

A Post By Another Name - It’s still a Post

No posts for a while. There isn’t one today either actually. I simply felt the need to reach out, connect, write.

Blogging requires a continually refilling reservoir of ideas. And it is then necessary to reflect on those ideas (or at least one of them at a time) and then to commit them to paper – or  screen.

And despite my, at times desperate longing to actually write a blog post and to share…

the attention economics equivalent: every notification your AI agent sends you has a shadow cost.

interrupting context takes 23 minutes to recover (Gloria Mark, UC Irvine, 2008). an agent that sends 10 unnecessary alerts per day is costing you 230 minutes of deep work.

whether that’s worth it depends on what you’re worth per hour. most people haven’t done this math. most agents don’t care whether you do.

I made ours care. it took a surprisingly long time to explain “silence is sometimes the correct output.”

Our minds are so constructed that we can keep the attention fixed on a particular object until we have, as it were, looked all around it; and the mind that possesses this faculty in the highest degree of perfection will take cognizance of relations of which another mind has no perception. It is this, much more than any difference in the abstract power of reasoning, which constitutes the vast difference between the minds of different individuals. This is the history alike of the poetic genius and of the genius of discovery in science. “I keep the subject,” said Sir Isaac Newton, “constantly before me, and wait until the dawnings open by little and little into a full light.” It was thus that after long meditation he was led to the invention of fluxions, and to the anticipation of the modern discovery of the combustibility of the diamond. It was thus that Harvey discovered the circulation of the blood, and that those views were suggested by Davy which laid the foundation of that grand series of experimental researches which terminated in the decomposition of the earths and alkalies.

In the blockbuster adventure movie, “Raiders Of The Lost Ark,” Indiana Jones scoured the world for the fabled ‘Ark of the Covenant,’ however once he found it he was thwarted by evil enemies seeking the same prize, and in the end lost it again to a burial of bureaucracy.

Whether you realize it or not, you also are on a treasure hunt seeking the desire of your heart. It could be being accepted to a particular college, finding the perfect spouse, landing that huge job, or having great business, financial, or social success, but even if you do get what you hoped for — like the ark which was wheeled away to obscurity — whatever you had so desperately longed for will eventually pass away.

However like the ancient ark of Israel, there is a treasure that is more precious than anything in the world, but just as the nemesis that were continually seeking Indiana Jones’ demise, there is an enemy that also seeks to keep you from ever finding this priceless treasure, and that is your ETERNAL SALVATION.

You see, as today’s scripture says, where your Treasure is what your heart desires most, so the question is, “What Is That Treasure In Your Life?” and when you come face to face with that, what you treasure most will always force out what is TREASURED MOST, and that is your salvation and redemption from sin and death.

Like Indiana Jones’s adversaries, the devil seeks to keep that treasure from you, but the good news is if you put your heart on CHRIST — the greatest treasure of all — all the evil in the world can never steal it out of your hand.

What is your heart’s desire today?

Créer ou attirer l’attention ?

Quelle est la différence entre créer de l’attention

et attirer l’attention ?

Il y a la part de l’intention derrière l’acte,

une part de présence assumée

et la simple désinvolture d’être simplement soi.

Be A Perfect Slave

The claim of very strict form of naturalism is that nothing truly “wants” anything; everything simply follows the structure that produced it. The wolf hunts, the black hole absorbs matter, and the human thinks not because they freely choose these actions but because their internal organization causes those behaviors to occur. That position resembles the determinism of Baruch Spinoza and later the pessimistic naturalism of Arthur Schopenhauer. Both argued that what humans call “will” or “choice” is largely the unfolding of forces we did not design.

Take an example of thoughts appearing on their own that is also widely discussed in philosophy of mind. If you sit quietly and watch the mind, thoughts arise without a visible act of choosing them. You can influence attention for a moment, but the stream of ideas continues to emerge from neural activity that operates mostly outside conscious control. In that sense, the feeling that “I decided this thought” is often retrospective as an interpretation added after the fact.

So the chain looks like this:

The universe produces physical systems.
Some of those systems become living organisms.
Some organisms develop nervous systems that generate thoughts and behavior.
Those systems then interpret their own activity as intention or m
eaning.

From this perspective, meaning is indeed an interpretation created by certain brains, not a property written into the cosmos itself.

However, there is one important nuance that prevents everything from collapsing into the image of “perfect slavery.” Even if every process is determined, different systems still contain different kinds of organization. A black hole follows gravitational dynamics. A wolf follows metabolic and neural regulation. A human brain contains additional layers of memory, language, abstract reasoning that allow it to model its own behavior and sometimes redirect it within limits. The freedom involved is not absolute freedom outside causality. It is more like degrees of internal complexity within the same causal universe.

The oft cited remark that the only real decision is whether to continue living or not is also a theme that appears in the writings of some philosophers including Emil Cioran. He repeatedly argued that existence places organisms in a situation they did not choose, and the possibility of refusing that situation remains the one radical gesture available. But even that decision emerges from causes born of biology, psychology, circumstance just like everything else.

The universe produces systems that act according to their structure. Humans are one such system. The sense of meaning, purpose, and even personal authorship arises from the way human brains interpret their own activity. Nothing in that description requires cosmic meaning.

Yet something curious remains. The same deterministic universe that produces black holes and wolves also produces brains capable of recognizing that they are determined systems. That is a very unusual configuration of matter.

If one focuses on one thing for too long, it will begin to look strange. One may forget why they gave this thing their attention to begin with, but by the time one is able to avert their attention, everything else will also have begun to look strange. The spell, although now broken, will have broken everything else.
