In “Consider Her Ways” by Frederick Philip Grove, there is a phrase that has trouble me for some time. He says “the human race-conceit of the investigator” What could this mean? I thought this might be about investigating different species (races??) of ants, but I was wrong.
It’s actually another one of his jokes: “the human race-conceit of the investigator” is Grove saying that humans do science instinctively. Birds build their nests, the human creature investigates things.
I’m always a little suspicious when some guy from 1947 starts tossing around the word “race” so maybe that’s part of why I missed it on the first pass.
I’ve also looked up most of the species names that he uses for ants. They have all been revised: but some aspects of the story make even more sense now that I know the modern names of the ants he’s talking about.
ALTThere is a scene in “Consider Her Ways” where the ants read by running over the text in books. This was so delightful I drew it. The photos of Atta laevigata by @alexwild@mastodon.online were very helpful.

I think one aspect that would’ve been way more interesting is if Atta found out about the warriors being circus bugs WAY earlier like from the start. Especially since it seemed like they were going that route.
I think I have somewhat of an idea for of all things (and look, just hear me out on this) a spin-off film or maybe television special to A Bug’s Life with Atta as the lead and Julia Louis-Dreyfus reprising her role.
• Regardless of whether or not it’s a movie or a special, the premise still remains the same and it’s that a week after the events of the previous film, Atta (or rather Queen Atta) finds herself kidnapped by a twisted, boisterous, sadistic, vile and sinister spider named Helix (voiced by Nicole Sullivan) who plans on using her to help infiltrate back into her former lair which has been taken over by her rival Shard (voiced by Stephanie Young).
• Even though it will still be as bright and colorful as the original film, it will still have the same dark and intense edge that it had as well this time to show the actual danger that Atta finds herself in and now has to use everything she’s got from her wits to her wings in order to survive but knowing the right moments when to balance it out with the comedy.
• Atta will be the only returning character from the previous film thus technically speaking, making this a standalone sequel of sorts but at the same time, it definitely helps to have seen the first film and know it without relying on endless call-backs and references. Top it off, it will be the only ever animated film in history to have an ENTIRELY female cast WITHOUT ever drawing any direct attention to it.
• Throughout the whole thing, Atta will have several bumbling, screw-up and downright boobish moments that are fully reminiscent of Elastigirl breaking into Syndrome’s lair as it’s all to show that she’s far from perfect and when push comes to shove, she gets way too cocky for her own good which leads her into humiliating scenarios in what clearly should be high stakes.
• The Atta spin-off will also establish a number of things like A). the original film and this take place in 1998, B). the Pixar Theory is bullshit as Helix is seen watching Toy Story on VHS obviously, C). there’s a little bit of an implied shared universe with others that aren’t Pixar, D). Atta’s dad just isn’t in her life anymore and E). this all takes place in the Texhoma area.

In the week leading up to the official Summit, Chile’s top travel outfitters ran 26 different multi-day trips, from the Chilean Antarctic to Easter Island (can’t wait to tell you about my Rapa Nui experience!), and mid-conference, all 700 of us embarked on a “Day of Adventure.” For Mike, this meant sailing to the southern end of the Patagonic Icefield to watch Grey Glacier calve canonballs of blue ice. While Anne plied a fjord to reach Bernardo O’Higgins National Park to explore two more awe-inspiring glaciers, followed by a farm-fresh feast at a third-generation estancia.
We came away from ATWS2025 with so many ideas for our South America stories, a hundred new friends, and a renewed confidence that adventure travel can change the world!
