I think of Pretend to be ants in a colony every time my wife does a picnic lunch or dinner (at least once a month March to November).
I am not a member, but Tumblr really wants me to join, so I often see their posts.

Alright guys, I’m turning in for the night.
If you have commented/reblogged an ant prop as of this post and still haven’t seen your ant, one of two things is going on
1. I saw your request and I haven’t drawn your ant yet, but your spot is GUARANTEED, so there is no need to panic!
2. You did not comment/reblog a prop, but only commented that you wanted an ant. If you did not comment/reblog a prop, you are NOT GUARANTEED a spot yet, so make sure to recomment/rereblog a prop for your ant!
See y'all in the morning!!

Some ants survive floods by turning themselves and their own young into a living raft.
When rising water threatens the colony, worker ants link their legs together to form a floating structure that protects the queen and brood. In some species, larvae and pupae are placed in the raft because they’re naturally buoyant, helping keep the colony afloat as the ants drift to safety until they can rebuild on dry ground.
Looks like when the water rises, they really know how to lean on their next generation.

Thanks to our Medants and Nurse Ants I have healed completely and will now resume my duties as a Nursery Ant and Leaf Scavenger/Cutter.

I prefer ants, but any Hymenoptera are good. And termites. They’re good too.

There’s lots of news that come through all of our social media feeds and on our favorite media outlets. We all follow the BIG stories, but there are always some that are interesting and useful that get away. Here are some of mine.

All of my ants made it through their first diapause!! And are in their snappy new set up ✨ expecting a population boom in a month-ish since they had ~15 pupa before I fridged them. Yippee!
I was moving over some of the pupa that got stuck in their original test tube with a tiny paintbrush. I held out the brush with the pupa on them to one of the workers in the out world and she so gently lifted them off the brush and left to go tuck them in in the nest. What a good big sis
(pls ignore the AI generated puzzle my gma gave me for Christmas lolol)
It’s not enough that I’ve to deal with mischievous Larvae that plot behind my back, it’s not enough that there’s a literal Anteater (and other ants) in the colony smoking cigarettes, it’s not enough that the nursery has had to be rebuilt 3 times over already, it’s not enough that some Nursery Ants are careless with the size of the crumbs they bring and hurt the Larvae, it’s not enough that the blasted Backrooms invaded, it’s not enough that hundreds of our young ones died due to the Nursery continuously failing to stay livable for more than two seconds…
THAT YOU HAVE TO TORTURE US WITH THE NURSERY BURNING DOWN. AGAIN?!

For more than ten years, Evan Economo’s lab has relied on micro CT scanners to image insect specimens. These X ray scans allow scientists to examine the physical structure and form of insects, an area of research known as morphology. Although the technique provides extremely detailed 3D data, it is expensive and slow.
“One limitation is that you can get this rich 3D dataset, but it could take 10…
