Really getting into the promotion part of the career this year.

My goodness there were so many gems I could have pulled from this call, but why not share the words of wisdom Natalie gave us in parting. She said that she could tell from the group’s questions that the 400+ crowd was full of intelligent people, she advised that we “Stop being intelligent. Get dumb and write your asses off.” The writing practice is all about getting out of own way, letting the writing do the writing, and getting to know our own minds. Can’t get enough of the #writingdownthebones work. If you haven’t read any of Natalie Goldberg’s books yet, I can’t recommend the enough. #amlearning #amwriting #writersonwriting #gettingdumb #stopwritingalone

Years ago, when blogging was The Thing, I was surrounded by amazing people doing amazing things, and I was so inspired by them.
But as they grew forward and I cheered them on because they were just so good and they kept growing better (and I loved them dearly!)—𝘐 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘺𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧…
And 𝗜 𝗹𝗲𝘁 𝗺𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 “𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲.”
My blog died. My business withered. I stopped believing that I had my own value.
My own work became the support of their work.
Instead of building my own universe, I placed all my focus on keeping others’ universes intact. I didn’t make time for my own goals because I believed theirs were more important—and I felt like I had accomplished something when they accomplished something.
_____
Have you ever told yourself that you don’t have to do something because your inspiration has done it first or better?
Inspiration is not enough.
Other people are never actually doing that thing you’re wanting to do. Their unique voice is not your unique voice.
And you will never find that voice unless you do your own work and stop letting theirs be “enough” for you.
𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘰 𝘰𝘳 𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘱𝘺.
You’re an original.
You can be your own inspiration.
Just do your work.
It’s enough. I promise.

P.S. Today I am playing with some new presets I purchased from @anastasia.marrch , and really loving the clean vintage effect on these images!

9 signs that you are intelligent on YouTube

Went to bed last night on draft number 13 of my #microfiction story 🤯 for the @nycmidnight #microfictionchallenge100. I expect to have at least 13 more today somewhere in between attending the @writersdigest annual conference and the #FindYourReaderSummit from Daniel Wallace. So, in short, my day is kind of booked. Every time I read Stephen King I’m reminded that good horror is the result of connecting with the character (s) on page 1.

1) Ordered an upgrade to my stalwart little Galaxy tablet, so that I can use the new one for sketching on. This is big. I have never been at all good at visual art. I mean that even my lovely teacher in Adult Art Expressions! class smiled tightly and said, “Oh, it’s so …genuine and so …primitive” of my Glass Vase with Flowers. I have been able to do justice to calligraphy and biology sample sketches, which are satisfying because of their precision. But I do enjoy pencil and charcoal sketching when I dare.
Exhibit A: Nephew Naptime (2006).

It’s worth noting that my mother is the family artist, with her own studio and regulars and gallery shows. My sister, the architect, is now also selling her artwork and has had her work hung at the UN in Geneva. Several of my friends are also professional working artists. So I’m surrounded by all this talent, and I have a full case of good quality art supplies and paper that I barely use for fear of wasting them.
Hence the tablet. I want to spend more time doing simple line drawings as a way of thinking about transmitting seeing - I work in 3D more readily than 2D, and I’d like to be able to do more useful field forensic and/or archaeology sketches rather than carefully shaded, laborious 3D renderings. I can sit at the beach and write as usual, OR I can sketch Trees and Logs, if that’s all I feel like, and erase it without feeling like I’ve cheated innocent supplies out of their raison d'être by screwing up.
I think I will not tell any of the actual artists in my life, though - they will be very happy and want to jump in and help, which no.
2) Applied for a pile of TAships that were re-instated very quietly and without notice. I was very cheeky and applied even though the reposted date was two weeks ago. Hey, the application survey was left open, and you never know. If I get one, I may just quit my Student Services data job and be able to focus ONLY on forensics…
Yesterday, I completed my first full week at North Moore. It took a few tries (and some legit questions from the students), but the information related to what is due when is clearer now. #AmLearning #Feedback #GetitDone

Like my kids, I have also participated in some on-line learning. #ProWritingAid, @Stage32, & more have sponsored free webinars where participants are taught about #brands, #writing, & how to stay #productive during this “down” time.
Thanks!

These last few weeks I’ve been getting back into Skillshare, an online learning platforms for creatives, and have been loving every moment. There’s so many great things to learn about for writers, from craft to platform to business. Despite being a college student and thus learning every day, I know that I’m not learning nearly enough about the writing industry and how to grow myself as a brand, so Skillshare has been a great commodity (and as you can tell by the sheer amount of notes, very informational!). What are ways you keep updated and continue to grow as a writer, in terms of craft and industry? Let me know in the comments- if you’ve got any other suggestions I’d LOVE to hear them!
