Among Malta’s most iconic images, few are as recognizable as the luzzu, the traditional brightly colored fishing boat that punctuates the island’s ports, especially Marsaxlokk. In the photo you can see a perfect example: a robust and harmonious hull, painted in bright shades of blue, yellow and red, which shine in the light of the Mediterranean.
Characterized by a pronounced bow and an elegant line, the luzzu is designed to face even rough seas with confidence. On the front edge of the boat, the most fascinating detail often stands out: the Eye of Osiris (or l-Għajn), an ancient Phoenician symbol that Maltese fishermen continue to paint for protection and good luck. Although not perfectly visible in the photo, it is almost always part of the traditional decoration.
Today, luzzi are not just work tools: they represent a real cultural heritage, a symbol of Maltese identity that continues to fascinate travelers and photographers from all over the world.

My 1992 series 2 Vauxhall Carlton. A very trusty chariot that cost very little to run but died due to rust around the rear subframe.
This was the last in a long series that began with a 2.5 ltr Senator, replaced by a very rare series 1.5 Monza (sold to fund an E150 Ford Dayvan). When our travelling business ceased the Dayvan was replaced with a series1 Carlton. I even had another fully loaded Carlton that was used for spares. They were all great cars, better than BMW’s or Merc’s but, unlike them, plagued with rust. Had Vauxhall/Opel used the galvanised steel of the smaller Astra they would have lasted better.
