My response to Buzzfeed's Weed article

I love Buzzfeed- it is my website to go to for a bit of light relief.  But then I came across this

…oh dear…  My incensed brain made me send them an email.  Here it is:

Buzzfeed,

I feel compelled to contact Buzzfeed about the 33 weed studies article.
My initial reaction is that it does not sit well with me and I feel it is lazy and irresponsible to post this article. Many young people are likely to read Buzzfeed as it is a fun and entertaining website (I personally love it for procrastination purposes!).

I am not disputing that there may be benefits from Marijuana but there are also many serious risks.
I work as a mental health nurse with teenagers in a national inpatient unit in London. I see teenagers who have episodes of psychosis as a result of using marijuana- these episodes can and do trigger severe and enduring mental illness such as Schizophrenia which require huge amounts of resources and time to resolve. Some, thankfully recover, however are advised to avoid the use of this recreational drugs as they are likely to trigger relapse. Granted some lucky folk can use marijuana and not be affected however it is more risky in young people, because of their still developing brains.

I appreciate some studies may indicate some convincing correlations between marijuana and beneficial affects to the user however it is important that when reading these journal articles, one is able to understand the effect of bias and have the skills to systematically review the evidence.
I would recommend searching the Cochrane database for systematic reviews that provide reports where the researcher has reviewed many studies, assessing their validity and quality, so that a more reliable conclusion can be made about the correlations.

The bottom line is not all research is good quality research and Buzzfeed should acknowledge the responsibility their success has bestowed upon them. Please take down the article and be more intelligent in the future :)
