Prism Suncatcher

“There’s Rainbows Everywhere”
I took the long way around to get here, but I’m here! My SunRain rainbow maker design comes from prism geometry: the prisms are close to a 15° wedge, so a 360° circle holds 24 lead crystal chandelier prisms, forming a sunburst. The rainbows from this radial design are stunning. When I first hung SunRain in a south window, bright rainbows scattered across the room—walls, ceiling, even a wall 25 feet away had one-foot bands of intense color from deep violet to red. It felt like the sun was raining pure color into our home.

For three years I’ve built lighthouses, waves, slab resin paintings, lamps, pentagon bowls, and 20‑sided resin balls; all of that led to SunRain. It’s a clear, faceted crystal sunburst ornament for a sunny window or a special gift. The Egyptian lead crystal prisms are 2" long and optically superb. The circular center is 6" across, weighs about 25 ounces, and the resin core is roughly ½" thick; with the slight prism lift, the piece is about 1" deep. A delicate gold‑colored chain attaches to the center and one prism end via jump ring, with a lanyard clip on the other end so you can loop it over a curtain rod or hang it from a tiny nail in the window frame.

SunRain rainbow makers turn ordinary sunlight into a room full of color. In my granddaughter’s bedroom, three SunRains fill the walls, floor, and hallway with dancing rainbows—she says, “There’s rainbows everywhere!” Each piece uses Egyptian 30% lead glass prisms by Asfour Crystals, which split white light into vivid bands of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet instead of the soft blur you get from plastic “crystals.” One SunRain holds 25 chandelier prisms in a daisy‑style ring; each 2" prism has 16 facets, so hundreds of tiny light generators create color much larger than the ornament itself.

When the sun hits a SunRain suncatcher in an east, south, or west window, pinpoints of sunlight fan out into moving spectra that reach across floors, walls, ceilings, and sometimes into the next room—it’s like confetti made of light with no cleanup. I designed SunRain to look delicate but be durable: epoxy resin and tiny nails lock each prism in place so it tolerates light bumps and drafts. Hanging is easy: each piece includes a 2’ gold-colored chain, lanyard clip, and small nails so you can use an existing hook, curtain rod, plant hanger, or the top of the window frame.

SunRain rainbow makers arrive ready to gift in an attractive black bag, packed securely so the prisms travel safely. Each rainbow maker is a handmade art piece that comes with a signed Certificate of Authenticity. I build them in my Omaha Resin Art studio — casting the center, firmly setting each prism in the radial pattern by hand, adding resin to lock everything together, then cleaning, adding chains, and checking every connection. If you’re local, you can see them at Benson First Friday shows or arrange a studio visit at 5069 Leavenworth Street in Omaha.

Midwest winters can be long and gray; a SunRain in a sunny window literally brightens the room, sending streaks of color across your space whenever the sun breaks through. It won’t replace therapy, but for someone facing winter blues it can offer a small, daily burst of joy when the spectrums suddenly appear. I first made SunRain for my family, especially my granddaughter, and seeing her face light up when the rainbows arrive convinced me it was worth sharing. Put one in a reading nook, another in the kitchen, and one in the hallway; each sunny day your home will offer new patterns of color and a quiet bit of magic.

My first sleeping dragon suncatcher. I love how this one turned out. I think I’m going to make a few more variations.
