I’ve recognised i stutter alot worse when I get hardly any sleep. It’s not like ?? Uh y'know something that really impacts me but it annoys me SO much 😭. Sometimes I have days where I can talk properly, but other days I’m stuttering bad? And I can’t say words- but I don’t know if it’s actually a stutter or just my brain trying to keep up with how fast I talk 😭

you know what I need to use tumblr more than just an image dump and endless queue so here’s a repost of some thoughts from bluesky

multiple times watching old looney tunes there’s bits where porky is stuck stuttering and someone loudly whistles and then he can talk. is this some reference to some gag, or is it some sort of old folk wisdom that’s disappeared with time and doesn’t get used because it’s inordinately rude?
is it like “if you startle someone stuttering it unblocks the speech”? I’d expect if anything it’d do the opposite. Is it people thought it did that, in the past? Or again, is it just like referencing some gag in some radio show where they whistled when someone stuttered and the context is lost?
I don’t really stutter (at least not in the disorder sense- I have moments when more tired etc but I’m sure so does most anyone) but I now realise I do have a family person I vaguely know who does, I might ask him if I see him again
another thought showing how much I don’t know about it as a condition- this man I know had a son. the son, as a kid, spoke fine. but as he got older, then teen, now adult, he developed a stutter too. something genetic? something from just learning to speak from dad? coincidence? I’ve no idea
(they had another son and said another son, to my memory, doesn’t stutter. why does one and not the other? etc)

if anyone’s got any insight feel free to let me know

A Pokemon trainer with a really bad stutter, who’s almost impossible to beat because during battle he communicates with his Pokemon using clicks and whistles. Like, he’s got an intricate system that he uses to issue orders instead of just barking commands in plain English, and a byproduct is that the other guy has no clue what move they’re using until it’s already connected. It’s impossible to read what he’s doing until you’ve watched him knock out two or three of your ‘mons, and by then he’s already got the lead. Is this anything

ufffff I hate my fuckass self

I’m lucky in that I don’t have as bad of a stutter as some people, but it still sucks to get made fun of for it. I think it’s probably because it’s so normalised for nervous characters to have a “silly little stutter” but it’s still a fucking speech impediment. Please do not make fun of me for shit I can’t control.

(not because of anything that’s happened recently, just feeling kinda bad rn)

Active footage of me (a person with a minor-moderate stutter) trying to read a phonetically transcribed stutter that was definitely not written by someone who has heard a stutter.

On the topic of Waterboy, must I say how frustrating it is to have people completely erase his stutter/stammer? As someone who has one, it is so, soosososososososoosososos amazing to see another character with one, even if his is technically from a lack of confidence more than anything else, it’s still very important to his character and seeing it erased is really disappointing in the fandom. Usually, I see it in fanart where he’s depicted seriously, or in an overtly “attractive” way, they take away his stutter, (along with other features that’s a whole other rant-) and it feels a bit insulting since you can totally be hot or attractive or just appealing in general and have speech issues. It doesn’t have to be just for comedic effect. The game like outwardly shows that 😭 give my boy his speech issues back make him talk bad please I beg of you!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone else stutter and can never land a joke because of it. Best case scenario the joke comes out awkward because I work around the problem word or phrase. Worst case scenario I just can’t fucking say the word at all and either stretch out the sound or stutter it for what seems like an eternity. None of my jokes ever get a laugh because so much of comedy is built on timing and growing up I thought I just wasn’t funny, and no one would want to be around me because of that. Fuck all that though I’m funny as shit and I know that because I make myself laugh all the time and that’s the person I’m stuck with no matter what !

PSA: stuttering in fics

as someone with a speech impediment, all of the people saying that only one type of stuttering is valid are wrong.

stuttering CAN look like this: “t-this is a-an example s-s-sentence”

OR this: “this-this is an example sen-sentence.”

OR this: “t-t-t-th-..t-ttttthis is an example sentence.”

OR this: “this is, uhm, an example, uh, sentence.”

OR this: “this is an example sssssss-sentence.”

OR this: “this is an examp-…this an example sentence.”

sometimes the sentence won’t even come out of your mouth at all.

there are probably many examples i’m forgetting, but that’s the point! it usually is a mix of a few of these, but some people do one of them more often than others! some people with speech impediments have certain sounds that they almost consistently have trouble with (for me it’s “st”).

people with speech impediments also rarely-if ever-stutter whilst they’re singing or whispering.

most importantly!!!! people with speech impediments are capable of saying a sentence without stuttering!! it can just be a gamble sometimes.

and if more people could portray the frustration that comes with stuttering and not being able to get words out, i’d be a very happy girl.

(fun fact: sometimes when my mouth won’t let me say what i want to say, i get so annoyed that i just yell or grumble out “WORDS.”)

this was your speech impediment PSA!!!!

I love dispatch but I need to say that waterboy is not good speech impediment representation. not only is his stutter played off as a joke, the fact that his stutter just goes away when he gains more confidence is a ridiculously harmful way to portray it. Speech impediments usually aren’t caused by “confidence issues” like Robert says, and saying that you can cure a speech impediment by just being more confident is so unhealthy.

Also the fact that the team chose to portray the nerdy geeky loser character as the one with a stutter is also a harmful stereotype against people with a speech impediment, who already have to do more than the average person to be taken seriously.
