Here’s the 5-step blueprint used by professional project managers worldwide:

1. Initiation – Define the goal
2. Planning – Create the roadmap
3. Execution – Do the work
4. Monitoring & Controlling – Stay on track
5. Closing – Deliver and finish properly

This framework is the backbone of PMP® and PMI project management.

When you follow this blueprint, projects become:
✔ More predictable
✔ Less stressful
✔ More successful

#Congratulations to all the Winning and Finalists Teams 🥳🎉

The 4th Annual Student Competition 𝟒𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, organized by the PMI Singapore Chapter at Republic Polytechnic (RP), brought together students from 10+ Institutes of Higher Learning to design, plan, and launch a retail shop in Singapore, applying core 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬 project management principles in a real-world context.

#FlashbackFriday

I am honored to serve as a judge and impressed by the teams of aspiring 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬 ability to:
☑️ Frame compelling business cases within tight constraints
☑️ Apply the correct project management tools purposefully
☑️ Articulate trade-offs between scope, timeline, risk, and stakeholder expectations

It was a privilege to deliberate alongside fellow judges:
✨ Frankie Shuai | ✨ Alexandre Maret | ✨ Leesun Huh | ✨ Linda Seah

Special shoutout to all the mentors, whose guidance helped students translate theory into thoughtful execution, and to the organizing committee (Jennifer Jim | Ronna Arunkumar), volunteers, Republic Polytechnic (venue host), and Smartsheet (PMI Singapore Chapter’s annual sponsor) for making the event a success. 🏆💯📈

🙏💙 Big thanks to the Project Management Institute, the PMI Singapore Chapter and the PMI Singapore Chapter Academic Outreach for the opportunity to serve as a judge once again. Witnessing the discipline, curiosity, and collaborative spirit of these future project leaders reaffirms what makes this profession so vital. —My PM Journey

Feature Release: Epic Tree View for Complete Work Hierarchy Visibility

Modern Scrum projects move fast — but visibility often does not. As products scale, teams struggle to clearly see how epics, features, stories, tasks, and sub-tasks relate to each other. The Epic Tree View in Orangescrum is designed to solve this exact problem by presenting the entire work hierarchy in a single, structured, and intuitive view.

This feature empowers project managers, Scrum Masters, and delivery teams to understand dependencies, progress, and scope at a glance — without jumping across multiple screens.

The Problem: Why Scrum Teams Lose Visibility as Projects Scale

In a typical Scrum project, work is broken down progressively — from high-level business objectives to executable tasks. However, as the backlog grows, teams often face these challenges:

  • Epics, features, and stories are managed in separate views, making it difficult to understand how work is connected.
  • Project managers must manually piece together information to answer simple questions like “Which tasks are blocking this epic?”
  • Scrum teams lose clarity on how their daily tasks contribute to larger business goals.
  • Stakeholders lack a single source of truth to track progress across the full hierarchy.

As a result, planning becomes reactive, reviews become fragmented, and predictability suffers. This is exactly why a clear, visual hierarchy is essential — and why we built the Epic Tree View.

Some Circles Just Keep Coming Back Positively at MBS ✨

The 𝟒𝟖𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐆𝐌 edition of the 𝐈𝐄𝐄𝐄 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 was held at the iconic Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. I found myself in that rare kind of ballroom: where handshakes turn into “what are you doing now?”, that quiet nod across the room, and networking tea over family, failed experiments, and manuscript review processes.

So glad to reconnect with IEEE #leadership, world top universities professors, researchers, old friends, #passionate volunteers and STEM students who are contributing to different technology verticals and education sectors in Singapore. Special shoutout to all those who always stood beside me and now I could finally thank them in person. 🙏

Moments like these remind me: technical (research) communities aren’t just about publishing papers and applying grant projects. They’re about sharing expert knowledge and continuity of trust, standards, and shared purpose.

The dinner was fabulous. Seriously, well done to the team and leadership by Dr Michael Ong Ling Chuen, Chair, IEEE Singapore Section. This community has shaped my career in ways no CV can capture. It’s where I learned that rigor and kindness aren’t opposites, they’re requirements.

Grateful to still be part of this STEM ecosystem and the wider 500,000-strong IEEE global community: 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲. 🚀🌐 —𝘔𝘺 𝘚𝘛𝘌𝘔 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘺

#RingsABell 🔔 First task as a researcher or project lead? Often: “𝐏𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞 𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐅𝐏.”

SINGAPORE—Most researchers learn procurement 𝐛𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠. And 𝐛𝐲 𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠. This session fills the gap. Procurement isn’t one-sided. Neither is this first task.

The organization also trains project managers to evaluate vendors — shortlist, score, select. But rarely do they step into the room holding your hands across the table.

Tomorrow evening, @PMI Singapore Chapter hosts a practical session with @Colin Millward, unpacking procurement from both sides:
☑️ The project sponsor (buyer)
☑️ The vendor (seller)

Not theory. Not templates. Just how proposals are shaped before they reach us, and how trust gets built (or broken) in negotiations.

📢 I’ll be there tomorrow evening, not as a speaker, but as someone who values understanding how systems actually work, not just how we assume they do. As the Director, Professional Development, in the Chapter, I invite you, your colleagues and your friends to join us. No pitch. No noise. Just insight. —𝐌𝐲 𝐏𝐌 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 🧡

The Risk Mistake 90% of Project Managers Make (And How to Fix It)

Most project managers only see risk as a bad thing, like delays, budget issues, or unhappy stakeholders, but the truth is risks can also be opportunities that help your project succeed. In this video, I explain how risk isn’t just about threats but also positive chances you can use to finish faster, save money, or deliver more value. You’ll learn PMI’s real definition of risk, the difference between threats and opportunities, and the five simple ways to manage positive risks. If you want to grow as a project leader, stop only playing defense and start using risk to your advantage.
