I know I’m a small blog but if you live in the US, please take 5 minutes to write to congress with the link below to support fair compensation for graduate students and postdocs.

We do a lot of work and get paid very little, despite teaching university classes and doing research on the very frontiers of our fields (I have to prove my thesis is new, useful work before they’ll give me a PhD). Both of these are huge sources of revenue for universities, and we don’t see enough of that.

I know grad students who live in their cars, skip meals for money, and put off necessary medical costs.

Tell congress we need guidelines now for fair compensation.

Support Competitive Compensation for Graduate Students and Postdocs

This was sent to me and put together by the American Physical Society (APS) Forums of Grad Student Affairs (FGSA) and Government Affairs. Their material is based on the Physics community, but it extends much beyond that.

The pre-written message is very specific to physics grads and postdocs, but please feel free to personalize.

The whisper of a program’s impact spreads quickly. In the beginning, it was only a relative handful of students who had the heart to follow the path of the Three Tata Fellows. But soon, a ripple of change began to spread, as more and more people heard of their plight and the way they dedicated themselves to improving the world.

The Three Tata Fellows seemed to almost exist in two worlds at once - the one experienced by their fellow peers, and one seen only by them. They lived life on a higher level than most could understand, and operated with a level of understanding and insight that was unparalleled.

Each of the Three Tata Fellows had achieved extraordinary things in the real world - inspiring others with their passion and commitment to the cause - but all had experienced a transformation of sorts during their involvement in the program. What began as a simple program of learning and growth had evolved into something much more - a way of life that impacted not only themselves, but the world around them.
