This whole article is worth a read, and quite fucking alarming (for example, there being a character on Character.AI based on the fucking Uvalde shooter). I want to highlight a few extremely telling bits, to really paint a picture of why generative, chatbot style AI is so corrosive to humanity, on purpose:

Former safety leads at AI companies told CNN that chatbot creators are aware of these safety risks and have the technology to stop violent planning on their apps but have failed to implement those safeguards. They said a desire to develop products quickly while outpacing competitors is prioritized over safety testing that can be time-consuming and expensive to implement.

Legislation could also hold the industry to account but – while European leaders favor this approach – the Trump administration has framed moderation efforts as “censorship” and positioned itself as a defender of tech giants, many of which are based in the US.



US President Donald Trump, in contrast, issued an executive order in January 2025 to revoke a Biden-era rule that aimed to protect citizens from the “irresponsible use” of AI, stating it was “inconsistent” with his policy to sustain and enhance “America’s global AI dominance.” In December, he then signed another order blocking states from regulating AI themselves.

In December, Imran Ahmed, the founder of CCDH (Center for Countering Digital Hate), was one of five social media campaigners denied US visas after the Trump administration accused them of attempting to “coerce” technology platforms into suppressing free speech. A US federal judge temporarily blocked his deportation while legal proceedings continue.

Perplexity’s new Computer is another bet that users need many AI models

Perplexity is making a very particular bet about the future of AI: the winners won’t be the teams with the single “smartest” model, but the ones that can quietly coordinate many different models behind the scenes. Its new product, Computer, is a cloud-based AI “super agent” that lives on Perplexity’s $200‑a‑month Max plan and is designed to handle real projects end to end—researching, pulling financial or legal data, analyzing it, then producing finished outputs like reports, dashboards, or even full websites. Under the hood, Computer juggles 19 different AI models and decides which one to use for each step, and Perplexity has even built its own AI‑tuned search stack and a research benchmark called Draco to argue that this orchestration beats traditional single‑model approaches on complex, real‑world tasks.

This is also a story about business model and positioning. Perplexity is edging away from ad-supported, mass-market search and leaning into a smaller group of professionals and enterprises who use AI for “GDP‑moving” decisions—and who are willing to pay for it. Features like a Model Council (which lets you consult multiple models at once) and new hooks for developers via its Ask conference and Comet browser suggest Perplexity wants to be the orchestration hub where different agents, tools, and workflows plug in. The open question is whether a flat subscription can sustainably cover all that multi‑model compute, but Perplexity insists its margins are healthy because it can route each request to the most efficient model rather than always using the biggest, most expensive one.

Why it matters: When you explain this to your audience, you’re not really talking about “a new chatbot”—you’re talking about a stack of specialized AI experts working together in the background, much like a well-run team handling different parts of a complex project.
