R.I.P Brigadier: you saved our butts this week, and died valiantly in our service. Welcome to the family, The General! If I had known that all I had to do to get the power back on was buy a new #generator, I would have done it days ago! You only hummed for a few hours this time, but we’ll sleep much better during this winter’s storms knowing you have our backs. #DisasterPrep #DisasterPreparedness (at Woolwich, Maine)

*** The Great Power Outage, Lesson 1: you never know when you’re going to need a #machete. *** That’s actually a direct quote from my dad, and I’m glad I internalized it. This morning I had to hack through thorny flora to set up an awesome tarp tunnel to keep the rain off the #generator cable. Also used: tomato cages, hammer, weed trimmers, nails, and binder clips. All with a baby strapped to my chest, and before I had brushed my teeth. And yes, I am Instagramming. Mental state cannot be undervalued. #DisasterPrep #BugOutBag FTW

Solar weather

Conditions at the Pearly Gate.

PSA;
If an Earth-centric coronal mass ejection occurred it would reach the Earth in eight minutes. A surge of plasma (mainly electrons and protons) will disrupt local power grids for months or even years. You can recognize these events as unprecedented upper atmosphere aurora borealis, intense levels of light, and UV strobing (causing both burns and nausea). Protect sensitive electronic equipment from the adverse effect of a CME with the principles of the Faraday cage and an alternative ground source. Keep watching the sky.
