Land seekers nail themselves to plots of land in South Dakota, 160 acres each. A sign nearby reads “Indian Reservation 10,000 claims”.
Thousands of people are doing all they can to attach themselves to it in South Dakota this week.
10,000 shares of Cheyenne River and Standing Rock Indian Reservation Land had been sold by the government to homesteaders in South Dakota, each 160 acres, for a total of 1.6 million acres of land.

In an effort to not waste any of this abundance I’ve been stewing and canning tomatoes with zucchini.
I finally managed to get through the rest of my plum tomatoes and zucchini but as you can see from the pictures I have quite a few cherry tomatoes still in the process of ripening.
There are only so many tomatoes a person can eat in a day so I had no choice but to preserve them as best I can.
These stewed tomatoes are not only absolutely gorgeous but delicious too.
Shockingly so because I didn’t do anything fancy. I just threw them in a pot and added onion, garlic, and salt.
In the depths of winter these will taste like sunshine.
They’re so pretty they make me happy just to look at them.

I met this handsome boy after work today and I just had to snap his picture because he’s nearly as big as my car.
Him and his brother are just as sweet as they can be and I spent a few minutes telling them how gorgeous they are and giving them scritches.
I haven’t been so thoroughly slobbered on in quite some time though.
They are very very good boys.

First cucumber of the year.
Why can’t I grow normal cucumbers?
Why are they always weird? Cute..but weird.
I’m not really complaining, I’m grateful I can grow anything at all.
My garden is a hot mess right now and I don’t see it getting better anytime soon.
I need to get better about spacing things further apart.
Weeding would probably help too.
I need a farm hand.
I mean I have Sammy but he won’t help me with the garden.
All he does is find a shady spot and take a nap.
He says he’s supervising but it looks like a nap to me.
Tomorrow I’ll get pics of the tomatoes and the baby zucchini.
Yay garden produce!
But not now, now the chickens have been tucked in and the goats are settled and it’s wine o'clock.
I’ve got a lovely glass of my favourite white waiting for me because it’s been a day.

Oops, we did it again. We bought 3 more Jersey cows. We have a Jersey cow addiction. We dropped two off at the butcher and picked up 3 more. For us they are the perfect homesteading cow. Easy to handle and mellow mannered.

My drive was clear at four when I went out to do chores.
That was an hour ago and now you can barely see the winter ruined grass peeking out from underneath the snow.
I’ve spent the last three days preparing for this storm. Making sure everyone has fresh bedding and plenty of feed.
Checking my backup heater, fuel and water supplies.
Charging up every battery bank I have including my Jackery in case the power goes out.
Making sure I have reliable extra lights just in case.
The plow, chains and extra weight are on the tractor and I’m about as prepared as I can be.
I’ve tried to think of everything but I’m certain that there’s a few things I’ve forgotten, but that’s the way it goes.
We can only do our best.
There’s nothing to do now but sit back with a hot drink and watch the snowfall.
I may as well enjoy it because I can’t make it go away.
I hope you’re all ready for whatever comes your way my friends. Stay safe, stay well and remember to pump your brakes.

Dog tax!
Because he’s my little sweetie and I don’t know what I would do without him.
He’s got it ruff, so ruff.
It’s been a hot minute since I’ve posted anything homestead related but there’s been plenty going on.
Winter chores are far less photogenic but just as important.
This is the time of year for repairing equipment and cleaning up messes.
For planning and hoping and ordering seeds.
But most importantly for resting because once spring hits I won’t have time to listen to my own thoughts.
That’s when it becomes important to have good systems in place so I can manage all the work.
Winter is when I come up with those systems.
Without good systems it’s not fun anymore it’s just drudgery.

My first ever batch of green tomato relish.
It’s so pretty in the jars and since I am contractually obligated to try it I can say beyond a doubt that it is delicious as well.
Unfortunately after doing this batch I still have nearly two buckets full of green tomatoes.
I’m probably going to make another batch of this and put it in small jars for sharing but that still won’t use up all these tomatoes.
So I’m gonna need some more ideas.
I have to do something with them because it causes me real physical pain to waste things.
I wholeheartedly believe in that old adage of waste not want not.
Besides, I like to share.
