Following news last month that New York’s hottest venture firm, Thrive, just raised $10 billion for a new fund — its largest ever, double the previous one — another big-name VC firm is attempting to equal that raise. General Catalyst is in talks to raise $10 billion, unnamed sources tell Bloomberg. This firm, which has recast itself as a broader financial services company, raised $8 billion just…

callie catalyst hero work timeline 2024

read previous years’ summaries here, or at the tag #callie catalyst timeline on my blog.

2024 had some of the most impressive callie catalyst sightings so far in her career! from responding to california wildfires in july, to redirecting three separate meteors, to (most importantly) answering buzzfeed question with puppies, callie catalyst has been a reassuring global presence and a beacon of hope in moments of crisis. as always, any callie catalyst sightings from this year made public after this post’s release will be added retroactively.

catalyst: a rogue one novel, pages 1-100

(this update is 80% about lyra erso, lyra my beloved, new favorite character unlocked)

  • oh boy is it hitting hard at this particular point in time to read a book about a war, even if it’s a very fictional one. oh boy
  • this first part was largely spoiled by the blurb of the book (lol), and i feel like it’s only now starting to establish real stakes and go deeper, but i did really like the idea that the ersos at the beginning of this story were trying to live their regular lives secluded from the war just doing their job, maybe even deliberately turning their heads from reality a little, but the war catches up with them and they have to face the way things have changed and that they are in the middle of it whether they want to be or not. it’s this inescapability of having to get blood on your hands no matter what you decide that i’m sure will get more dreadful the more the story continues - we all know where this is going
  • i love the way lyra is written here!! empathetic and kind but also no nonsense, resourceful and very perceptive, even though she of course has no way of knowing the horrible things that lie ahead. and she’s also force sensitive!! that’s such a nice touch. it doesn’t feel shoehorned in at all, but very fitting with her personality and values, as a person deeply in tune with nature. i’m curious how that will play out in the future!
  • and also, i know the bar is in hell but seeing a main character who also happens to be a mother made me realize how rare it still is in scifi & fantasy (let’s be real in any genre, actually) that a female character gets to be a parent and a protagonist at the same time, instead of motherhood swallowing all of her agency and becoming her only role in the narrative and her only personality trait. i’m a big fan of baby jyn just being there for the rest of the narrative because obviously she’s with her parents!! and yet they’re still doing stuff!! revolutionary. this is also an interesting thing for the novel to do because in rogue one, lyra does fall heavily into one of those archetypes marginalizing female characters, as the main character’s mom who immediately dies, and her voice doesn’t really show up in the story much at all. so i think it’s a great thing for the novel to do the opposite here and really flesh her out (which will make her fate hit all the harder but i’m already preparing myself for the emotional challenge that will be rogue one itself)
  • i also like the way galen is written so far, very close to how i imagined him as a younger man. god things are going to get so bad for him and he deserves none of it :( but that’s why i’m here as a tragedy enjoyer!!
  • baby jyn!! and poor girl was born in captivity, which also sadly fits her story so well - an entire life scarred by and intertwined with war :/
  • i personally would sometimes like a little more of characters’ internal monologues than luceno’s writing style is going for - it’s there but it’s much more plot focused, and sometimes feels a bit like hitting plot points instead of really going immersive with them. but on the other hand i’m also not mad that that allows me to fill in the blanks in a bit with my own interpretations of the characters, which i have formed already. and i really liked the one flashback chapter we did get!
  • my favorite quote so far is unmistakably: ‘in a physical match between her and krennic, he might have put his credits on lyra’ !!! that’s on canon!!! (what we’ve seen so far of them interacting - lyra immediately calling krennic out on his bullshit and not letting him off the hook for the war crimes in vallt in every single conversation and it clearly pisses him off but he can’t say anything in front of galen - is exactly how i imagined their dynamic and it’s 10/10. toxic coworker trio of all time, give me more)
  • we also better get more backstory on the talent program and the origin of galen and krennic’s friendship! what drew the shy genius and the ambitious diva to each other in the first place?
  • i feel like the plot is really picking up now and getting to the interesting part, i’m excited to keep reading!

Regarding my last post (why am I wording this like an email), I’d like to add something. There was one person in my section in marching band (pit) who’d give me a deep sense of longing whenever I was around him. I was already having my trans feelings, but he drove them to the extreme, speeding up this “reaction”, like a catalyst. That was when this truly became a crisis. Anything marching band/marimba (he’s a marimba player) made me feel this intense longing. Even listening to a playlist of marimba music made me feel like this, along with the album of the song in his GroupMe profile. The album was…….I have no fucking clue how to describe it but I’m not surprised it got rated a 0.5/5. I thought it was one of those that just takes multiple listens to like it (it could’ve been, I only listened to it once). This longing was to be a man like him. Despite how awful this feeling was, I didn’t want it to end, and I had this weird ass premonition that a war was going to start and he would be drafted/join the military and die in a war. The line that struck me the most was in his GroupMe bio; “I hope to teach music one day!” (Yes, with the exclamation point). What if he didn’t make it? I’ve never told him about this premonition or about the feelings he’s made me have, the longing to be a man. Now that I’m off my old meds and on new ones, the specific man-longing is gone, but I still have some longing around him, just unspecified. I had percussion ensemble last night, and the longing, the same one at band camp in the summer that made me try to figure out тоска by молчат дома on the vibraphone during our dinner break, was back, and just as intense. I sorta want the feeling back, but now it’s gone. I had a less intense and shorter type of this feeling 2.5-3 years ago. I don’t know if this feeling will come back, but this marching season was its second time coming around. If it comes in 3 year cycles, I am COOKED for my senior year.

I think I was/am going insane help
